Title: Official Fantasy Baseball Thread
Post by: War Eagle!!! on February 12, 2009, 09:17:34 AM
I set up the league. League ID is 62985. League password is tigersx.

Everyone from last year should ave gotten an e-mail with an invite. Any noobs can join as well. I did not add any different stats this year but we can add holds and On-base percentage if you guys like. Holds is a pretty tough category in my opinion and I would rather do without, but we can vote on adding the new stats. This is a democracy, but my vote counts for 13....

Also, I can not find where I can change how the tie-breakers work. I will keep looking and get on that if  find something better Ogre.

The draft is Tuesday March 24th at 8:30. The only requests I had was that it not be from Mar. 16-20 and it not be done too early. If you sign up for this league, please try to set time available for the draft. Not only is it fun, but it makes kicking your ass that much more enjoyable because you actually PICKED your shitty ass team. We may can change this if needed.

Good Luck Guys!

Just a note that the draft starts at 8:30 PM Central Time.  Also I see that there is a setting for "no playoffs".  What's up with that?

I will look into the no play off thing. I am up for putting extra money in and having a tourny winner and season winner if you guys want. It rewards for the season and also keeps everyone interested in the play offs. That is what I do in my cash FF league and it works out nice.

ok...alright...you got me...i was trying to pull a fast one on you.

as the current tigers x fantasy baseball champ, i do offer this advice:

pick players born between the dates of may 1st and october 31st of the hispanic descent, preferably dominican.  statistically, these players perform best on teh yahoo fantasy baseball.  you can sort by birth date and ancestry when pre-ranking teh draft order.

I don't know how the baseball thing works, but we had so many people in the football deal that it was impossible to make a move when you needed to.  There were no players left to pick up

I vote for AUTR. That way no one will have to send their money out to TX and it is less chance for it to get lost.

As promised, here is a basic run down of how this thing works:

Basically this is a head to head league. You can fill your roster with whoever you want and of what ever kind of players you want. You can have all pitchers or all first basemen, but you can only start C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, 3 OF, and a Utility(which can be anyone) and 2 SP, 2 RP and 3 other pitchers of any kind. You also have 5 bench players and 2 DL spots if any of your players go on the DL.

The scoring catergories are R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP. You try and "win" the most of these categories against the guy you are playing head to head against that week. If you win 6 and lose 4, you will be posted with a 6-4 record going into the next week. SO if you go 6-4 the first 2 weeks, your record will be 12-8.

That is basically it. It's pretty fun and relatively simple. You can be as involved as you want or justset your roster once a week.

We need to vote on how we want to do the money. We have 12 people for $240. I vote giving some money out for regular season winner and then play off winner. That way you reward the guys that work all year and also give people a shot to win a little at the end.

Let me know if you guys have any questions.

Thanks for the rundown, this is my first stab at fantasy baseball.  I have, in fact, a very basic question:  what is the weekly schedule?  Football I know is Mon/Sun (occasionally Thurs).  College Basketball is Tuesday and Saturday (occasionally Wednesday).  So when do they play the baseball?

Pretty much all day every day. It's what can make it interesting and time consuming if you let it. That is why I said you can spend a lot of time on it, or just set it once or twice a week and forget it.

MLB teams play 162 game in a 6 month period so each team has about 20 off days spread out over 6 months. That's it. They play A LOT of baseball...

You set it the day of as long as the game hasn't started. One thing: if you pick someone up, you can not play that person until the next day. So don't try and pick someone up thinking you will be able to play them immediately.

Good to know.  Thanks.  All other tips and tricks are appreciated.

This is my second year playing fantasy baseball.  It is MUCH more involved than other fantasy games.  I'd recommend checking it every day to every other day, as you can rotate who you play on a daily basis.  It's also worth it to buy the "stat tracker" as the season is so long and you can really get your money's worth out of it.  I didn't buy it last year, and I regretted it.  I'll get it this year.  It helps you keep up with who is hot and who is not.  This is huge, as fantasy baseball is ALL about which players get on streaks and which ones are in slumps.

Expect to be more involved that with other fantasy games.  Especially with pitching...you always want to see if your pitcher is scheduled to start, as pro teams will occasionally switch their starting rotations around and then you're starting a pitcher who isn't starting in reality.

Here's who all I have in:

War Eagle!!!
Jumbo
Thrilla
Ogre
Wesfau
Chinook
Buzz Killington
ssgaufan
AWK
AUTR

10 total.

I also vote for paying out the regular season winner and playoffs winner.  If we have $240 pot, then do we split that 50/50 between regular season winner and playoff winners?

We could also do where the person who gets 2nd place in the playoffs gets his money back (or more)...leaving $220 to be split evenly between the regular season winner and the playoff winner.

What do you all think?

I think that winning the regular season requires more consistency over a longer period of time and should be rewarded more than the playoff winner.  I'd go 80-20 or 60-40, but I'm ok with an even split if that's what everyone else wants.

I don't see why not.  We need to get a hold of Jarhead and Tiger Wench, then, and see if either wants in again.  Gotta have an even number of teams, and all.

Rider, check this thread for registration information.  I'll send the PM to Jarhead and Wench.

Agreed, with a caveat.

My vote is 2nd place playoff winner gets his $20 bucks back.

From the remaining pot (the total pot being either $240 or $280) we give a 60/40 split.

60% to regular season winner, 40% to playoff winner. (Meaning a $132/$88 split if it's $240  OR   a  $156/$104 split if it's $280, and that's counting the $20 going back to the 2nd place playoff winner before the 60/40 split was calculated)

We could also do where the person who gets 2nd place in the playoffs gets his money back (or more)...leaving $220 to be split evenly between the regular season winner and the playoff winner.

What do you all think?

Hey asshole...you forgot last years 3rd place finishers.

I've been enrolled in this year's league for a while...just haven't posted in this thread.

OK, so AUTR will be our treasurer.  In order for him to collect money, we need him to PM all of us his address.

Here's who all I have in:

War Eagle!!!
Jumbo
Thrilla
Ogre
Wesfau
Chinook
Buzz Killington
ssgaufan
AWK
AUTR
Aubie16
Pale Rider

12 total.

AUJarhead and Tiger Wench claim to have jobs that keep them too busy to participate this year.  I'm not sure that they realize that the gub'ment will just bail them out if they don't work, but hey, that's their choice.

So this is it.  12 folks.  Lock this motherfucker down.  AUTR, don't forget to PM Aubie16 and Pale Rider yo' addy.

We need to decide on payouts.   I'll take the lead and start a voting thread.

The draft is Tuesday March 24th at 8:30.

Is this 8:30 AM?  I frickin' assumed that it would be 8:30 at night.

I am unable to access the yahoo stuff from work.

If I can done no pre-rankings, will it default to the computer rankings?

Probably, but it has nothing to do with Fantasy Baseball.

I hate I missed the draft. I got last minute free tickets to watch the Stars game last night so I couldn't do the draft...and that's my favorite part. I need to make some moves...

SO....I am looking for some Ace pitching. I will trade anyone on my team for the right move. You can even have one of my 472 first basemen.....

Quick question:

It's probably because I fucked myself and let the draft happen automatically, but why in the blue fuck would the league give me a player that is not active?  A quick search shows that the kid is in the fucking minors.  Do you routinely waste roster space on a kid hoping that he'll get called up mid-season?

Last Year: 6 teams made the playoffs. Top 2 seeds got a bye. 3 rounds total with the championship series being 2 weeks long.

This Year: 8 teams make the playoffs. Nobody gets a bye. 4 rounds total with the championship series only being one week.

Got a Philly or a Brave?  Then you better check your lineup.  The fun starts this Sunday night, bitches!

For those that don't know about fantasy baseball...when "starting" a pitcher, make sure they have an arrow (looks like an upside down "v") by their name.  This indicates they're starting on that day.  They can accumulate stats if they are in the "SP" slot or "P" slot.  Naturally, if they are on your bench and start, you ain't getting jack shit for it.

Good luck! (to me...if you're not me, then you've already lost, and I'm not just talking about baseball, but the game of life)

That was me...but I don't make many moves during the season. It was only my 2nd and I think I made less than 10 all of last year. Of course my team faded from the dominate 1st place team to 2nd at the end of the year and then 3rd in the playoffs. So maybe I should have made a few more.

If it ain't broke, then don't try to fix it (don't try to fix it).

$1 to the Fresh Prince.

I got Jumbo last week, I am looking for another sweep this week.  One of my pitchers had a phenomenal game last night.  Pitched a shut out for seven innings... something like 13 KO's... Daddy like.

You offered a catcher batting 159,  for a Pitcher who's era is .5 and He has 5 wins and No losses! That was a kick ass deal thanks man!

You should have mine, or will get it shortly. I sent it about a week ago. Bank of America Check. From an Auburn address. Was a bank printed check since BOA has the option of paying everything online (even personal addresses). I never write and send checks anymore. First name is Brad.

Did you get it? I just realized I never gave you any reason to know that was from a TigersX guy except for the $20 amount. My bad.

Sorry about that.

Yeah it is a pretty nice system. Bank of America has online bill pay with almost everybody that you would need to pay, but if it isn't in their system, you just type in the name, address, and amount of the person/business you want to pay and they will print a check and mail it to them for free.

I went easy on you.  7-3-0.  Our collective stats sucked...I guess I just sucked less than you did.

Here are the standings at the halfway point of the season.  You have to be in the top 8 to go to the playoffs.  Looks like Aubie16 is making a strong case to take some of the money in the pot as he's firmly held on to first place so far this year.

Don't forget that I led the majority of the year last year as well but managed to fade down the stretch and finish 2nd in the season and 3rd in the playoffs.   I'm trying to not become the mets and do it all over again.

But until I can prove I can hold onto a lead, it is still anyones game.

I'm not so sure that will happen to you this year.  You had a monster draft which is evidenced by your lack of moves, and it *probably* will carry you to the end of the year.  I prefer for you to repeat last year, however.

Chances are that, if you played a Brewer or Indian last night, you have fantasy mid-wood right now.

Unless, of course, it was a SP for one of those teams.

I forgot you had Braun.  Figgers that you get the top dawg from last night.  The chips keep falling your way.

Firmly in 2nd place for the day is Cecil Jr. and his grand slammedness:

Prince Fielder
R    HR     RBI     SB     Avg
 1     1       6       0     .667

The best I could pull out of the matchup is DeRosa.

Mark DeRosa
R    HR     RBI     SB     Avg
2     1       2        0     .400
He's been a decent nondrafted pick up, if I do say so myself.

Just curious...but why the hell would you want to get rid of Reyes? He is on the DL and you only have 2 people...including him...on the DL anyway. You aren't using that extra DL spot anyway if you drop him or trade him...so what's the point?

Why not keep Bartlett starting for you while he is hot and keep Reyes on the DL till he gets healthy...he won't be out the whole year...

That is why they put those restrictions on there. So people can't trade a top 10 player for an average player at best. Reyes for Escobar? That is a no brainer...

Don't make me change some shit back...

Haha I was wondering if anybody was going to try to stop these from going through after Buzz and I both put trade offers out there. DL really isn't a reason to drop somebody because you get to put them on the DL and they don't count as a roster spot.

Do it, if need be.  Trading Reyes for Escobar or most any other player would not be fair.  It's still kinda early...they may heat back up.  Patience, patience, patience.

Also, you may want us all to vote on trades...I saw where you changed it to commish decisions only.  Just thinking you could have everyone's input on trades if need be.

I have 2 shortstop's that are a ton better than Reyes
Jason Bartlet is hitting 373 with 7hr 31 rbi
Ben Zobrish 293 ave with 15 hr 31 rbi

If someone wants Reyes send me a trade worth a shit and Ill trade him. I need a pitcher or a good 3rd baseman. Dont waste your time sending me some bullshit trade.

I suck.

Always have trouble finishing, eh?

Lots of games left.  Although the window into the playoffs is closing rapidly for those in the cellar.  The damn Death Dealers are hotter than that burning sensation I once got from the Fuji Spa.

You traded for Ivan Rodriguez, not Jason Bartlett.

They objections to the trade weren't about it hurting you...it was about it helping Pale Rider unfairly.

good luck disabled vets.

i'm impressed that both of you have a .154 batting avg.

i've told my team to play small ball this week against a team with big bats; however, pale rider called up a couple of work horses to help in the average department for yesterday's game.  it worked.

i've told my team to play small ball this week against a team with big bats; however, pale rider called up a couple of work horses to help in the average department for yesterday's game.  it worked.

The waiver wire can be your friend.

i know, ask thrilla.

i decided on sunday to play you different.  i looked at our previous match ups and decided you were to strong to compete with in the pitching department; therefore, taking a chance on the waiver wire was bit risky, knowing my luck.    plus, i noticed you had been using it quite a bit lately regarding pitching similar to me.   it has worked well for you.  i will say you grabbed penny from me as i was looking for an individual to balance out my rotation for the remainder of the season.

I shall live and die by the waiver wire this week.  Next week, I might be a little more conservative.

If there is a next week...

This is right.  It was pleasure coming out of nowhere to establish my dominance in the playoffs.  I look forward to doing it again next year.
