I saw where Neil Young was so upset at what he called the spreading of misinformation about Covid and vaccines by Joe Rogan, that he demanded all his music be removed from Spotify immediately. He said it was him or me.
Please Neil, rethink this. You're not seeing things clearly. How would we make it through the day without some Sweet Caroline or Cracklin' Rosie? You and Joe need to talk this out and.......

some of his songs are indeed good....and I'm all for free speech man. But is this not more an authoritarian move? Censorship? Free speech goes both ways. I don't like Rogan's diet advice either but im all for him being able to say it. Neil is literally trying to censor something he doesn't agree with. Thats where I differ here.

BOOM!!! I'm well aware of Neil Young and his impact on music. Hell, Old Man was one of my favorite songs to play on the guitar growing up. And Rogan, other than his UFC calls, I can take him or leave him. But this right here^^^is the point.

Not of fan of squashing speech of those you don't agree with whether its govt induced or not. It's an extremely authoritarian position to take in general. If rogan was doing the same for Neil, I would be defending Neil here. It's not about the politics but the principle.
BUT I GUESS at the end of the day, it WILL BE free market, because if Spotify caves to this, they will feel the free market fallout from it considering the size of Rogans audience. Neil Young has every right to take that position and yes, take his music off Spotify. Technically, it isn't true censorship, although it would be right on the door step of it if Spotify complied and closed Rogan down. My issue was two-fold. First, that Young was self-absorbed enough to think making his demands would be taken seriously. I thought it was laughable.
Second, this type of move wreaks of cancel culture. I don't like what you have to say; therefore, I need to shut you down. It's one thing to say I choose not listen to you, I choose not be associated with you, or I prefer to change the channel etc. Everyone is free to choose. But to make demands that those you disagree with be silenced.....

At their heart, these are all BUSINESS decisions: if the perceived flak or damage to your brand outweighs the value of some no name host of a third rate reality show, you drop the loudmouth. You guys should love that.

Since Covid and Vaxxing is at the heart of Young's argument, here's where this all would have been a non-story for me. There have been numerous artists in recent months who have canceled tour dates at particular venues, due to that venue's, or even that State's vaccination policy. That's true for both sides of the issue. Some have said if they don't require proof of vaccination for all patrons, they won't play. The same with the other side. We're not showing if you're demanding everyone be vaccinated. People are passionate on both sides. I get it. I respect that.
But none, to my knowledge, have demanded that venue be shut down, or that other artists follow suit and cancel shows there. They may have, I just haven't seen it. But that's where Young went off the rails. If he had just said I can't share a platform (Spotify) with someone who is sending a message so contrary to my views...and left Spotify, I'd have glossed over the story. But telling Spotify it's him or me...you shut him down, or I'm leaving...well now you've crossed that line where I'm concerned.
