Title: Conf Champ Weekend
Post by: djsimp on December 03, 2016, 03:10:02 PM
Is anyone even watching? I mean, who cares right? I am curious as the results of the Big12 b/w the Sooners and Cowboys. All the talking heads seem to thing Auburn will play one of these two in the Sugar Bowl. Outside of that, it all looks boring.

The big 12 should not be allowed to play on conference championship Saturday until they have a conference championship game. The regular season was over last week for the conferences who matter.

Not really watching. Doing some painting and going through old clothes I can't wear. I'll have the games on listening but only for noise. By the way who needs clothes? Got a bunch of 38w-32l dress pants for the needy liberals here that like freebies.  Looks like I'm staying at 32.

So bama steam rolls the Gatahs as predicted.  :rolleyes:

BUT.....For the 3rd straight game there has been questionable play calling in the 1st half leading to some bad football on offense and the worst 4 year kicker in the history of college continued to solidify his collegiate lore.

13-0 is nice but very deceiving.  Minus the most opportunistic defense I've ever seen in Tuscaloosa this is a 2 loss season.

I think everybody and their brother knew bama would win. I was surprised the Gatahs actually scored a TD.

So the Sooner win. Does that mean Auburn plays Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl? I assume that is correct.

Yeah, the defense was definitely as opportunistic as any I've ever seen.  Otherwise, I don't buy the 2 loss take.  Only seriously challenged once the entire season in the Ole Miss game.  LSU?  Meh.  They couldn't score.  Otherwise, every game was a cake walk.  Just too many athletes at every position. Hell, even the punt returner, Diggs, looks like Usain Bolt.

I will be interested to see how they match up out of conference now.  If the playoff positions hold as they are now, Bama should get Washington in Atlanta.  I'm a bigger believer in the Huskies than most.  They've got serious size and speed.  I wouldn't begin to claim UW would beat Bama, but that would be a damn fun game to watch.

A match up against a traditional power like that in the Sugar Bowl would be awesome.  However, I wish they were playing more like they were early on.  They've been punkin' a bitch lately.

It will be awesome as long as SW is the starter and the Baylor transfer signs with Auburn just before that. If we are 100% healthy, we can win that game. If not, I'm not watching more twirlybird bs.

I think the west coast offense style of quick passes is the best way to beat Alabama.  Quick slants and an occasional deep ball. You can't beat them runnning, I honestly don't think anyone in the country can beat them running. But quick passes causes disruption and secondary is a weakness. A converted linebacker is starting at safety. Washington poses problems for sure. Probably moreso than anyone else.

Agree to disagree.  Saban has spent 6 years building a defense that can defend a dual threat QB.  If Clemson was going to do it, they would have done it last year.  They can't do it.  I don't think Ohio State can do it.  The only team that I think can beat Alabama's defense is a team with a QB who can get rid of the ball quick.  Ole Miss has a good QB and they nearly did it.  I think Washington is the best passing team in the playoff hunt and I think they are the only ones who can drop back and get rid of the ball to beat the pass rush.

See, that's all they got against bama. That will only work the 1st have before he is seriously punished. PAC 10 can not defend against the SEC. Auburn could beat Washington.

The top 4 should stand.  It should be Bama/ Washington and tOSU/Clemson.  If it's not...they should put the Selection Committee in front of  firing squad.

Yes they did but if the Big Ten is the best overall...how do you stick the weak sauce schedule of Washington (loser at home to 3 time loser USC) when Penn St.'s loss to Michigan occurred 6weeks earlier? And don't get me wrong, PSU's divisional schedule was very soft.

The problem is the timeline of when, where and how bad the loss is perceived I suppose.

Yup. The only team that has a chance against bama is Washington, like RWS stated earlier. If for some reason they bump PSU to that #4 spot. Hand bama the Peach Bowl trophy & the National Championship trophy. Let #2 & #3 play for the winner of the bag of potato chips trophy or for the Playstation trophy (whoever owns the bowl now)...no need in playing for it, they're just going to get themselves hurt, unless they all start stacking some serious steroids now, to catch up to bama.

Final score of Washington-USC: 26-13

Final score of Michigan-Penn State: 49-10

Here's what the CFP committee protocol states:

Quote
While it is understood that committee members will take into consideration all kinds of data
including polls, committee members will be required to discredit polls wherein initial rankings are
established before competition has occurred;

Any polls that are taken into consideration by the selection committee must be completely open
and transparent to the public;

Strength of schedule, head-to-head competition and championships won must be specifically
applied as tie-breakers between teams that look similar;

Committee members associated with any team under consideration during the selection process
will be required to recuse themselves from any deliberations associated with that team;

Quote
Selection committee members have flexibility to examine whatever data they believe is relevant to inform their decisions. They also review a significant amount of game video. Among the many factors the committee members consider are strength of schedule, head-to-head results, comparison of results against common opponents and conference championships won. The playoff group has retained SportSource Analytics to provide the data platform for the committee’s use. This platform allows the committee members to compare and contrast teams on every level possible. Each member evaluates the data at hand, and then the individuals will vote to produce a group decision.

It's an eye test. That's it. Conference championships, head-to-head - those kind of things are there to help solve tie breakers.

Granted, I believe the CFP committee is there to ensure the playoffs generate the most money. But if we go by their word, it's all about who "looks" the best and not who is the most deserving.

Just for kicks, substitute PSU's dilemma with Auburn being jobbed in favor of Alabama...and we beat them mid-season by a FG.

 Washington might be overmatched as was Notre Dame in 2013. OSU and Clemson both recruit well and have the most recent history against them so I guess we'll find out.
We have our hands full in the Sugar Bowl given the Sooner's are playing their best ball while we are trending downward. ,

Rumor mill says he has a complete labrum tear.  I am still getting over my surgery from October for the same thing.  Now, I realize that I am a fat ass and old.  I was told by my surgeon that therapy will do much good if any at all if it's a complete tear.  You either have it repaired or suffer through it with pain.  I am sure that throwing motion for him, even if it's a partial tear, is painful and he will not be as effective as he hopes to be.  Just my thoughts.

He also must protect himself while playing.

I heard the latest MRI was not as bad as first thought. But to be back by bowl game? I doubt he would be 100%.
Sort of like last season for the bowl game. Rusty as hell if even that!

What about Woody? Can he go for the bowl game? Or would he lose his redshirt? I thought bowl games were a free for all.

I also played catcher, the batter took a step back and knocked me over the head with the bat.

Before I quit baseball, I was playing right field and the coach called everyone in because the batter was going to bunt. He didn't bunt...he line drived the ball to my face.

Real story:

My dad was my little league baseball coach. I was afraid of being hit with the ball by the fastest throwing pitcher in the league, so I would step out of the batter's box when I would swing.

Meaning we shouldn't believe anything else you say?   :poke:

You ever been to the X-gate? Puts that group to shame especially if we let Buzz hit the meade and send him to the outdoor restrooms.

Anything past the bolded part of this story is just exaggeration and BS.

Nope, 100% true. I got talked into playing Tee ball, because when my dad asked me if I wanted to play Tee ball, I was really thirsty and all I heard was Tea. I said yes. The rest of the day I was wanting to know where the tea was, I had to settle for a Mello Yello.

Since you said Tee Ball, it reminded me of my kid's first "sports" experience.  In his very first at bat in Tee Ball, he hits it and as is usually the case at that level, the 15 or so kids in the field all ran after it at one time.  He paused and saw what was gong on....then proceeds to help all the other kids run after the ball too...bat in hand.  They somehow all arrived at pretty much the same time.

Chip off the ole block.

My daughter started playing softball at 5 years old on a 6-8 team. Friend was coaching and needed one more kid to fill the roster.

 First game she drew a walk.   Reached second when half the infield ran in to try to field a slow roller.  Next kid up was the only one who could hit.  Eight year old natural athlete.  She crushes one into the outfield.  When my kid finally realizes she needs to run, the third base coach, all 6-6 300 of him is windmilling and screaming Go home! Go home!

So she ran right past him, tears streaming down her face, went through the dugout and straight to my truck. She was going home.  Took me two games to convince her to try it again.
