Title: The Official 2014 MLB Bitch and Moan Thread
Post by: Tiger Wench on March 30, 2014, 11:34:01 PM
BREAKING NEWS:

In a stunning development tonight, on the eve of the 2014 MLB season, the fucktard owner of the alleged professional baseball team in Houston has announced that the Suckasstros will not field a team this year. All player contracts have been terminated, all season tickets have been refunded to WalMart gift cards, and Minute Maid Park will be converted to a holistic therapy center for crippled Mexican hairless chihuahuas. Nolan Ryan has purchased the rights to graze his herd of Angus cattle on Tal's Hill.

Fuck baseball. Fuck Jim Crane. Fuck the Suckasstros. And fuck all y'all with your real teams and your real players and your massive payrolls.

Play ball.

It's the Orioles....and everybody else.

Seriously, the Braves SHOULD have a damn stout line up.  But I'm afraid we're just going to have to sit and suffer through BJ Upton and Dan Uggla looking overmatched again this year.  But, the big thing is pitching.  Sweet Jeebush it's been 20+ years since the Braves have had a staff this pathetic.  Julio Teheran is your "ace".

Shows how much I know.  I said this Braves line up could be awesome but they have zero pitching.  They did almost no hitting but the pitching gave up a total of 4 runs in 3 games.

EVERYTHING points to this being the year of the Orioles.  Hitting and pitching are looking incredible and players are talking smack about breaking fans' femurs.  You can't get better karma than that.  And of course, St, Lewie is the usual shoe-in for the WS.  We're talking an all-bird series.

It's way early, give us time, we will settle into our rightful 4th place spot and be -12 by the time Oct rolls around.

Now I normally would agree with you about the Cards, but this is the year of the Bravos.

Dale Murphey, recognize.

Speaking of the Murph, the Braves organization at that time was incredibly dysfunctional.  Understatement of the century.  But, I was reading something one season that talked about proposed trades that teams were talking about with the Braves.  There was one 3 team trade where the Braves would have to give up Murphy and would have received Jesse Barfield (Bad ass right fielder for the Blue Jays in the 80's.) Rick Aguilera, closer supreme for the Mets, and Lenny Dykstra, center fielder and leadoff man for the Mets.  The Braves nixed it and chose to stay the most irrelevant team in baseball for another decade.

Gotta' say that was a mighty entertaining game between the Braves and Phillies last night.  They get two homers from Evan Gattis and one from Mr. Sub .200, Dan Uggla.  5-1 lead going to the bottom of the 8th and the Phillies plate 5 to take a 6-5 lead.  Braves load the bases in the 9th and Uggla sends one about 30 rows up in left center.  9-6 Braves win.

Nice to see exciting baseball now because they certainly won't be in the playoffs with the Orioles and Cardinals being shoe-ins for the world series.

I haven't seen the stats but I'm 99% certain the Braves have the lowest ERA in the majors for starting pitching.  I'm 99.9% sure they have the lowest team batting average.  This team is unbelievably shitty at the plate.  And that's with Dan Fuggla on the bench the last 5 games.

I'm having a really hard time understanding what the hell has happened to our offense.  We didn't have this problem last year, and its pretty much the same line up.

Ha!!!  Missed it by THAT much.

Bravos are #1 in all of baseball in pitching.  However...

they're 29th out of 30 teams in hitting. A sizzling .231 team batting average.  I believe the lowest batting average among any Colorado starter is .280.  Yeesh!

Agreed.  First off, get Heyward out of the lead off spot.  Just because they had a little stretch of success with him there last year doesn't mean this guy should be your lead off hitter.  He's barely been over .200 all season.  And I know the guy is 6'5" but why does he stand in the first base dugout to hit.  Move up to the plate.  It ain't workin' Jason.  Second, sit BJ Upton and give Jordan Schaefer (sp?) a legit shot.  Put him at lead off and see what he can do for a couple of weeks.

Third, fire the hitting corch.

The race for the All-Bird World Series continues.  In the AL, the Blue Jays got hot and opened up a 4.5 game lead on one of this years' WS participants, the Orioles.  On a side note, Nelson Cruz is kicking some major posterior so far for the Baltimore Birds.  The Tigers look to be the best in their division and the A's have the second best record in all of baseball with probably one of the lowest payrolls.  Quick...without Googling, name 2 players for the A's.

Times up!!!

In the NL, Baltimore's WS opponent went on a streak of suckness and are 5 games back of the Brew Crew.  Quick...name 2 players for the Brewers not named Ryan Braun.  Times up!!!  No way the Brewers hold off the Cards the rest of the season.

Giants have the best record in baseball and the Braves somehow still have the lead in their division.  But...there's only 6.5 games between first and last.  If they don't start hitting soon, they'll get got.

Cards vs. Orioles.  October 2014.  Must see TV

Giants have the best record in baseball and the Braves somehow still have the lead in their division.  But...there's only 6.5 games between first and last.  If they don't start hitting soon, they'll get got.

Cards vs. Orioles. Bravos vs. Tigers October 2014.  Must see TV

Some players wear short sleeves, some long.

It's obviously not as cold in Atlanta, as seen here by the players on the infield fly.

Went to my first Astros game in 4 years yesterday. Corndog wanted to go for Fathers Day, so whatever. Tickets are cheap and you can even bring in your own food and drink...

Astros hit two home runs in the first. Good start.  I started to get that old feeling again...

They held the lead thru six.

Then of course it went to shit.

Shitty ass Rays (actually worse than the Astros statistically) tied it up and then loaded the bases and singled in what would be the winning run.

Astros used SIX DIFFERENT PITCHERS. Just a total clusterfuck.

Astros lose. Their hot handed new stud went 0-fer.

And whatever feeling I thought I had was just gas from the sauerkraut on my stadium dog.

Fuck em. #suckasstros

Brad Asmus is now the manager of the Tigers.  They are in town to kick the ass of the Suckasstros. Or not. All tied at 3 after 8 tonight.

He is as gorgeous as ever.

I miss the camera angle of him crouched behind home plate. Man, what an ass.

With the team being teh suxs, I had to take my pleasures where they came.

Don't judge me.

Quote
Hudson finally on the biggest stage

SAN FRANCISCO -- After 16 major league seasons encompassing 468 starts (counting the playoffs), Tim Hudson is revving up for the most daunting challenge of his career. It will test his resourcefulness and powers of concentration and require him to do something that's rarely achieved in the sporting world.

Against all odds, Hudson is trying to convince his pal and fellow Alabaman, Jake Peavy, to make the switch from "Roll Tide" to "War Eagle."

Hudson and Peavy have spent the past few months bonding with teammate Madison Bumgarner in a section of the San Francisco Giants' clubhouse they good-naturedly refer to as "redneck row." When they're not talking pitching strategy, the conversation inevitably turns to college football in their home state. Hudson is a former Auburn All-American and Peavy signed with the Tigers out of high school, but that's where their rooting interests diverge.

"I'm Auburn, through and through," Hudson said. "Jake's an Alabama fan, but he's not the typical fan who bleeds [crimson]. I'm trying to convert him. He signed with Auburn, so the door is cracked."

As one door opens, another is balanced on the precipice. Bumgarner pitched the Giants to a 7-1 victory over Kansas City in the World Series opener, and Peavy dropped a 7-2 decision to the Royals on Wednesday thanks to an implosion by the San Francisco bullpen. Now Hudson will try to get the "dynasty" narrative back on track and move the Giants a step closer to their third title in five years when he takes on Jeremy Guthrie in Game 3 on Friday night at AT&T Park.

October has been an emotional, whirlwind tour for Hudson, who crosses items off his baseball bucket list with every champagne celebration. In the National League Division Series, he threw seven stellar innings for a no-decision against Washington. When the Giants eliminated the Nationals three games to one, it ended a streak of six consecutive postseason rounds in which Hudson's team failed to advance. That tied him with Ellis Burks, Rafael Furcal, Ramon Hernandez and Joe Nathan for the longest futility streaks to begin a career in major league history.

Hudson pitched into the seventh inning while logging another no-decision against St. Louis in the NLCS, and the Giants outlasted the Cardinals to get him to his first World Series at age 39. Hudson is crafting the same twilight feel-good story that Adam Dunn might have written if only the Athletics hadn't been eliminated by Kansas City in the American League wild-card game.

With his quiet, determined approach, Hudson symbolizes what the Giants represent. Through three career stops and four All-Star Game appearances, he's emerged as a popular teammate and a respected opponent with an appreciation for the little things. Hudson, Peavy, Bumgarner and their fellow Giants starters are so passionate about the game and diligent in their work habits, they've blurred the invisible line that typically separates pitchers from position players.

"When guys are competitors like that, they're gonna be respected by everybody," Giants first baseman Brandon Belt said. "Pitchers usually hang out with pitchers, and it's the same for hitters. But the divide with this team isn't as large as with other teams I've been on. That's what makes it so special."

While Barry Zito stepped away from the game this season and Mark Mulder tore an Achilles tendon in his attempted comeback from the broadcast booth, Hudson carries on the legacy of Oakland's erstwhile "Big Three" by climbing baseball's career achievement lists. He leads active pitchers in wins (214) and ranks second to Mark Buehrle in innings pitched (3,003) and wins above replacement (56.9). Among active pitchers with at least 1,000 innings pitched, Hudson ranks a mere 60th with 6.04 strikeouts per nine innings, so he has not been a dominator in the classic sense.

Still, by the most old-fashioned and conventional of measures, Hudson has made his mark. When he went 9-13 this season, it broke a streak of 15 consecutive years with a winning record. That tied Hudson with Pedro Martinez and Cy Young for the second-longest streaks in history behind Grover Cleveland Alexander, who logged 19 straight winning seasons from 1911 to 1929.

Hudson's longevity is enhanced by his creativity and powers of reinvention. A decade ago, when he was pitching for the Athletics and then the Atlanta Braves, Hudson was content to throw sinkers 70 percent of the time, watch opposing hitters pound the ball into the ground and make a beeline for the dugout. This year, according to FanGraphs, he threw his sinking fastball 53.8 percent of the time and complemented it with a healthy mix of sliders, curveballs and splitters.

"As you get older, you have to put your ego aside and incorporate things into your game that you wouldn't do when you were 24 or 25," Hudson said. "It's about changing speeds and eye levels. I'm definitely a better pitcher now. With age you get smarter. You understand your limitations and your strengths."

It also takes fortitude and vision to know when not to quit. Hudson's 2013 season in Atlanta ended on a gruesome note when he fractured his right ankle in a collision with Eric Young Jr. of the New York Mets in late July. He signed a two-year, $23 million deal with the Giants in November, and he knew he made the right call from the day he arrived at spring training in Scottsdale, Arizona.

It helps to pitch in a constructive, mutually supportive environment, and the Giants are big on southern comfort. Matt Cain comes from Tennessee, and Ryan Vogelsong was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, before his family moved to Pennsylvania. He's the only San Francisco starter without a twang in his repertoire.

"Someone asked me about the whole 'redneck' thing and how that became a relationship," Vogelsong said. "That's what people see from the outside. Inside the clubhouse, it's all about the respect we have for how each guy goes about the game. When a teammate takes the mound, you want to know three things: Does he want to be here? Will he give you everything he's got, and has he done everything he needs to do to be ready come 7 o'clock or 7:15 every night? That's where the unity comes from here."

No Giants have a more natural bond than Peavy and Hudson. They first met years ago during a chance encounter at a restaurant in San Diego, but Peavy, who's six years younger, had been following Hudson since the mid-1990s. Hudson won the Golden Spikes Award as a pitcher-outfielder at Auburn, and he was an inspiration to Peavy as an undersized, right-handed sinkerballer with big league aspirations. Peavy briefly committed to Auburn, but the Padres convinced him to turn pro when they offered him a $100,000 bonus -- the equivalent of fourth-round money at the time.

Fifteen years later, Hudson and Peavy own ranches about an hour apart in Alabama. Their wives and kids have become friends. And they've proved that it is, indeed, possible for an Auburn die-hard and a Crimson Tide rooter to live in harmony when they're joined in a quest for a common goal.

"When I was getting ready to go to college, Timmy Hudson was a huge part of me wanting to go to Auburn," Peavy said. "He was a guy I looked up to and wanted to be like. I was even a little jealous when he got to pitch in Atlanta, so close to our home. It's funny to think that after all those years, we have a chance to share this and we're locker mates now. It's been a really cool friendship."

The friendship will continue this offseason when Hudson coaxes Peavy to an Auburn game or two and they discuss the relative merits of Nick Saban and Gus Malzahn over tailgating. It will be a whole lot cooler if they can attend the Iron Bowl, kick back and muse about what their world championship rings are going to look like.

Ehhh, he's better than the record shows. Run support was an issue in his starts. Ive read his ERA was under 3 after the break. Jarhead can opine.

Heyward also wasnt all that. A modern day Dale Murphy really. Sounds like a good trade for both teams.

Ehhh, he's better than the record shows. Run support was an issue in his starts. Ive read his ERA was under 3 after the break. Jarhead can opine.

Heyward also wasnt all that. A modern day Dale Murphy really. Sounds like a good trade for both teams.

Can't say I wasn't disappointed in his career so far.  Defensively, there are none better. But, it was that incredible potential he had at the plate, which hasn't panned out yet.  I always thought he was just F'd up with his approach at the plate.  Weird stance and standing so far off the dish.  Probably a good trade but it's just scary to give up a guy so young and athletic.  Wish him the best but I'm gonna' be pissed if he goes to the Cards and tears it up.

He was good, back of the rotation type guy, maybe could have been a solid 2 or 3, but with Waino locked up long term, Lynn and Wacha the clear 2 and 3 for a few years, Miller became expendable.

The issue for me is pitching was not the Braves problem last year.  Overall, they towards the top of the league in most categories.  It was hitting, plain and simple.  So, what do the Bravos do?  Trade their starting second baseman for a pitcher coming off Tommy John surgery and trade their starting right fielder for a another pitcher.

But it does - more times than not - win championships. Giants, Cards the last decade - nuff said.

The more I think about this trade, the less I like it.  I keep thinking it's a JD Drew for Adam Wainwright, but in reverse.

I hate, hate, hate it.  Our pitching was fine.  3rd overall in the NL. Our hitting was rancid.  11th out of 15 teams.  I can live with trades of Heyward and La Stella...oh, and RP Jordan Walden. But we needed sticks.  Go get the Big Panda for chrisshakes.

BTDub...did you see what the lowly Marlins gave Jeeanncarlo Mike Stanton?  13 years?

After going to the Clevelander with GF, I can totally understand why someone would want to play for the Marlins.

I don't see the worry.  Bravos hit 120 next year without breaking a sweat.

Yep.  I think a .120 BA next season is about right.

And since the Braves need hitting so bad, they're meeting with John Lester Thursday.

A lot of that bad hitting was because of Heyward. He was hot n cold and in a contract year. Some good pitching can cover a lot of hitting woes, esp when its a hot n cold hitting team like the Bravos. Get quality pitching when you can. Heyward was overrated, overpaid and they got a good young long term arm for him. I just would have prefered it to be BJ.

I can agree with all of this with the exception of the "hot" part.  When were the Bravos ever hot last year?

Braves signed 31 year old Nick Markakis to 4 year 48 million contract to replace Heyward??  What the fuck.  Are they about to move the team to Miami??

I'm guessing they never even sniffed of A's 3rd baseman and former AU All-Everything, Josh Donaldson. Toronto is going to love his 29 HR's and 98 RBI's.  But hey, Nick Markakis.

Excuse me while I go Google Nick Markakis.

Doing a little looking and found this first line from an article in October.

John Schuerholz completed what he called "the best negotiation of my entire career" by convincing his longtime friend John Hart to accept the role of president of baseball operations.

So since they let Frank Wren go, they've let their starting right fielder and 2nd baseman go too, and signed a .500 starting pitcher, 12 washed up relievers and a Nick Markakis.  The thing is, now all the other assholes on this board can't even try any reverse karma on Braves fans.  At least not without uncontrollable laughter.

All we need now is a washed up 3rd baseman, a live arm from the California penal system and a guy who can't hit the curve.

This guy and Heyward have ROUGHLY the same stat line. Both gold gloves. Except their salaries in 2014 were very different - Markakis - 15 M, Heyward - 3.5 M....Markakis will be turning 36 at the end of this contract. Good grief.

Markakis has more success in the lead off spot. But that being said, why would wither of them be in the lead off spot!

I don't know why Gonzales can't see that BJ Upton would be the best lead off hitter in baseball.  He's one of the better contact hitters in the game and drives the ball to all areas of the field. His on base percentage is off the charts but the surprising thing is the power he generates.  The guy could literally carry the team from the lead off spot.
