Planned obsolescence at this time in history gets a big FAIL.

Can't you purchase the "Apple Care Protection"? None of their machines have ever been "user serviceable". You have to take them back to the "Apple Store" and you pay full price for repair or hope that you have the Apple Care Protection and it's covered. Then they send it off to depot and have it repaired unless the shop you are dealing with is a fully equipped repair center with "Certified" Apple Technicians on staff. They are a lot like IBM and Global Services, they make it so hard to work on that you have to purchase the support for an extra $350.

I'll never buy a mac. PC and linux for me. I've been using linux exclusively for about 8 years now. Stated learning Redhat 9 in 2002. Apache is cool too. About to load open BSD 5 on my desktop and take it for a spin. Fuck Apple and Microsoft up the ass with a fist.

I like to walk into the apple store and cropdust the hell out of everyone in there.

Not going to get into the Mac vs PC debate, but nothing wrong with Mac Hardware, if one knows command line and anything about the Mac OS you soon realize that is BSD and Darwin with some Apple flavored commands thrown in the mix. Had one at my desk for about 6 years and managed two 256 Linux clusters and one 3000 CPU Mac Cluster. I also was a backup for 44 frames of P690 Regattas running AIX. It wasn't a problem for us as myself and two others were "Apple Certified" and we were our own service center. Dead CPU, no issue, we just sent a request in and it was shipped to us the next day and we fixed it in house.
The only problem I have with Apple is the proprietary bullshit, they won't let you work on your own machine without being a repair center and the cost. Same issue I have with IBM. Nothing in the world wrong with the functionality of the Mac OS and the HW is pretty solid for the most part. Now saying that give me an AMD Opteron based machine with RedHat. I hate microsoft with the burning fury of 1000 suns. They can eat shit and die.
-
Another thing that pissed me off about Apple was when they went from the different CPU's. Motorola AltiVec, IBM ppc970 were both fine processors but neither could keep up with Apple's demand. Instead of doing something smart like buying out AMD when they were in financial trouble and having all the CPU's they could produce, they go with Intel. It's not like they couldn't have bought out AMD. They had/have the money. Fuck Intel too.

BF is just running off at the mouth. Apple is UNIX based just like Linux when it gets down to command line level. Except much more polished. More limited than Red hat and Android? Perhaps, but a much smoother product. And I've had them all. They all have their pros and cons and it just depends on what you are looking for. I was sick of all of the errors, instability and freeze ups from MS and Android. And whether people like it or not, Apple has forced the others to put better products out and upped the bar industry wide.

The fact that you have to "LEARN" Redhat has always been an obvious flaw with Linux OS's. You shouldn't have to be a developer with command line knowledge to use an OS.
BTW - Apache is normally run in a UNIX environment, but can be run on Windows boxes as well. Jakarta has been making tomcat for enterprises for a LONG time.

That is what I hate about the Apple bashers, don't hate on the HW or the OS, hate on the cost and the fact they are proprietary and require you to purchase Apple Care in order to have your machine covered. If I could walk into a shop here in town and buy parts for Mac's that I could install myself without having to buy directly from Apple (which you can't unless you are a reseller or repair center) then I would have no issues buying a Mac.
On cropdusting: Used to work with a guy that would eat pickled eggs, boiled cabbage, pintos and drink a 6'er of Bud heavy from time to time. We all sat in what we called the "Bat Cave". 8 of us in one giant office. There was no escape when he decided we needed torture.

I agree on the proprietary stuff. But I also think it's a double edged sword. A lot of that is why it is such a polished product. They don't just let anything get into their HW or OS, or let just anyone touch it. The "walled garden" is a fitting expression.

Um, Red Hat's version 9 didn't come out till March 31 of 2003. And as others have pointed out, Mac OS has BSD under the covers.
It really frustrates me when some make this Linux/MS/Apple issue a religious war. I agree with the arguments about proprietary verses open, but I also know each system has its strengths and weaknesses. As a guy that buys/approves all technical hardware and software for a company, we have mostly Windows PCs, but have a few iMacs and Linux servers. We also have iPads and iPhones. Same deal at home: a couple of PCs, an iMac, a MacBook Pro, iPads, Android tablets, and a Linux machine (yeah, I'm a geek). Not going to get into a Mac/PC/Linux war, or iOS/Android war - they all have their strengths and it basically boils down to what works for you.
But the top Apple guy is an Auburn grad - that should count for something.

I agree, it does keep others from making mods and you do have a more polished product. I just wished they would have taken user input instead of blowing it off. They did allow us to peek under the covers once so our "Evil Geniuses" could engineer a new way for the OS to handle memory management.

I couldn't remember the exact year, but you are correct. I was probably one of the only people to buy Redhat 9 at the Micro Center in Darien, IL ( I had dial-up then and refuse to wait on that download). However, it was being tested in December of '02. Now we have Fedora which is a continuation of the .rpm linux or Red Hat. I can't wait to try OpenBSD though.

Command line yes. Apple is more limited than Froyo & Gingerbread for Android. I'm looking to try an Apple product one day (primarily for video rendering), however, I can't fucking afford them.

Both my iphone and ipad run multiple apps much more stable than any android I had. Just saying. But there are thing I liked about Froyo better. It was faster and had more power. You could tinker. But as far as a finished product and being seamless? Apple is #1 and it's not even close. Sorry.

As most know on here, I'm technologically impaired. I'll be lucky to find Angry Birds. I hadn't taken it out of the box until our tech guy came by today to work on our interwebz. I had him set it up and show me some stuff. But hell, it was free. We used a company to re-do our website and they gave it to me as a gift.

Sorry there are certain things that Apple does better than PC. Especially when it comes to video processing. I have both and use both. That being said Apple also pisses me off on a lot of their shit. First off they are way too expensive. The macbook pro is the tits but does not need to be $1800 for the base model, that's fucking asinine.
Also the proprietary connectors and shit, drives me nuts. The fact that to buy an apple keyboard will run you $50 is bullshit. The inside of the computer is not proprietary though, whoever said they were angry Apple went to intel over the motorola is wrong, the fact that they did is great actually. It took the machine from being proprietary into being able to purchase outside drives and memory. I have no problems working on mine, I just upgraded the memory to 8gigs and it took me less than 15 mins.

That is true, what pissed me off about the whole thing, is that I was loving me some Apple at the time and I wanted to see them do something like buy out AMD so they wouldn't have to depend on someone from the outside to build their chipsets. You could always purchase and swap out memory, airport extreme cards and external drives with the G4's in the powerbooks and even the desktop models.

For some reason you are stuck in 1996.
And on the new connector, I would be willing to bet there is an adapter made where you can still use the current charger for charging only. Maybe not data xfer though since the pins are different.

My Asus MB (2005) has features where hardware can be disabled (as most do). Drivers for the MB have to be installed via CD that comes with the MB. Yes, mine is old, but only 7 years old. Asus K8V SE Deluxe with AMD 64. http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_Socket_754/K8V_SE_Deluxe/
6 Channel Audio
The K8V SE Deluxe uses an onboard Audio CODEC that lets you enjoy high-quality 6-channel audio without having to buy advanced sound cards.

Godfather, have you been into the sound controls to ensure that the master is enabled? Here's a forum I go to when I have problems. Without physically being there, we could go back and forth all week. http://vip.asus.com/forum/topic.aspx?board_id=1&model=P8Z77-V+LX&SLanguage=en-us
There's test to see if you audio is working. I had audio problems with java & youtube (it may have been enabling hardware acceleration) and it's been many years ago , and I can't remember how I fixed it. But that was WinXP32-bit. Since using linux, I haven't had any issues with audio. Wireless and touchpad firmware have been the major issues with newer versions of linux and some of the older PCs (mainly Acer junk).
I WOULD NOT FLASH THE BIOS UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO. TAKE IT A TECH AND LET THEM HANDLE IT BEFORE YOU TRY TO DO THAT YOURSELF.

No offense BF, cause I appreciate the help, but I have been building computers since high school. I know my way around them. I have already flashed the BIOS to the latest version. I wasn't really asking for help in here, Simp was asking about my computer because I was helping him with something. 2 weeks ago my motherboard was fried when my house got hit by lightning. That's how I got on the subject of my audio not working. Thank you though.

No offense taken except for that peanut gallery fucker. I don't know much about the system you have, but a lightning strike is serious and could have fried more than the MB. Speakers could be shot (try head phone jack), PS I assuming you have the same power supply), Bad board (even new), hard drive failure (if it didn't get hit too). I'm sorry you had a lightning strike, but here is a solution for that if you need one.

Your gyrometer and accelerometer have to be synergized so as to be compatible with a flux capacitor. It must convert 1.21 gigawatts into enough energy to propel a vehicle at exactly 88 miles per hour.
