What's the board consensus on platooning QB's?
-
I'm not ready to move on yet.
-
Do you really believe you can get a consensus on here? Regardless, what matters most is what I think and I am fine with it. I wish we would've done that this season. Gus can confuse the d enough to not completely tip off passes or runs. But obviously, there would be a greater chance of a pass with Johnson in.
-
I didn't think Kaldril Frayzha was still in the mix.

I'm not sure it would have been any different with JJ in. The problem was not really the passing, but the pass plays called. The short slant to Uzomah was open all night. We threw if ONCE!
Once again, CGM wanted to drop back and survey the field while they are blitzing. The stacked to box to stop the run and blitzed often. Quick passes in the middle kill that. But he wanted to get the long ball.
With a QB like NM, you have to throw those quick slants. He has a quick release and is pretty accurate on those. If he hits Louis in stride, TD. But that doesn't mean JJ would have hit him (prolly would, but still).
I do feel JJ needs some series like Dylan Thompson got at USCe. But when NM in hot running the ball like he was for the last few games(not last night), you cannot argue for JJ.
It should be interesting. We seem to have a good crop of QBs coming in.
-
Chicks dig the long ball
-

Me either but I do think that eventually, they will probably feel more comfortable allowing JJ to throw more--assuming he has more accuracy than Nick. It doesn't matter to me either way, I'm just saying I'm comfortable if Gus wants to go with two.
The only play I second guess from last night is the pass to the end zone when we had a 3rd and 4 inside the 10 I believe. I would've preferred to run it twice if it took it. Overall, I think he called a hell of a game.

You dig anyone who still has them.

What's the board consensus on platooning QB's?
Why?

I'm not ready to move on yet.
Me either. I really don't even know what to do with myself. I thought a good long drunk...but I don't think it will help.

You fuckers need to pick yourselves up, rub one out, and get on with your day.

I didn't realize that you liked to view the head and shaft?
Yeah. That was it!
-
Why?
I just think Johnson is too good to ride the pine for long, but I also think Marshall is too good to not have out there.
-
I'm not sure it would have been any different with JJ in.
Wasn't trying to insinuate that JJ would have won us the game, but I just wonder if Marshall goes in next year as the 100% starter or if in spring and summer there will be a reevaluation done.
-
I just think Johnson is too good to ride the pine for long, but I also think Marshall is too good to not have out there.
So what I'm hearing you say is that Marshall will be on the shoulders of Johnson next year and we will have our very own tall Mallett cat.

Seems legit.

Uh huh

Part of me wants a "traditional" qb.
But it it's really fucking hard to argue with 12-2 and SEC champs.
So, I say it's Marshall's team next year.

'cause
Ok. Thanks.

I agree, but will add that damn wildcat play call.
Might as well have taken the snap and then take a knee. I friggin hate that play.

We really shine with the zone read working with NM. And our whole game is clicking when we can get wide but FSU took that away. Anyway Nick is pretty crafty with his ball handling and I don't think Johnson can enhance our run game
If you listen to Dilfer he states that dual purpose types (ie Kaepernek) always revert to their comfort zone and I think Marshall doesn't necessarily look for a safety over the top or read progressions as much as he looks for wide open first, run second and then buy time by scrambling which got us into negative plays in the second half.
I thought it interesting/odd we threw the ball to Melvin Ray twice when he barely touched the field all season except for special teams and hasn't been in the receiver rotation.

You do know we run the same play a lot during a game, just with the actual QB instead of the RB taking the snap?

I heard one of the experts say that we didn't really run a zone read and that Nick was running plays sent in by Gus. I don't know but I've thought that he at least mostly read.
And, I thought there were 3 or 4 times that he could have given it to Mason for some potentially big runs that he missed on last night.
But what the hell does it matter. We blew it and it's time to start working toward next season. I have some plays for Gus to look over.
-

In that instance, the defense knows there's a possibility that the QB can throw it. When our RB stands back there alone and takes the snap, it's 100% run.
It's been the same play with the same result for 4 years.

I don't think there's any doubt it's Marshall's team next year. He may not have been as flashy as Manziel or Cam, but the guy's one of the more gifted runners I've ever seen at quarterback.
Malzahn is also a guru, a magician, a faith healer, a Jesus Christ if you will when it comes to improving the play of the quarterback. Look at what he did with Chris Todd. Look at how Cam became the #1 overall pick. Look at how much Marshall improved between weeks 1 and 12 this season.
He'll get Marshall in winter conditioning, spring practice, and summer workouts. Marshall will ball out next year.

Even the EBSPN guys were talking about what a multi-dimensional, gifted athlete Marshall is. Honestly, I don't see this as even being a point of discussion.

Agree with the basic premise here re Marshall.

I think the only reason it's a point of discussion is that JJ is so good. I agree that it's going to be hard to beat out Marshall but it has already been reported that Gus said that it would be a dog fight in spring.

See, I told you. Just like my inside sources said, Nick is still the man.

PASADENA, California -- Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee doesn't expect a quarterback battle on the Plains in the spring.
ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit reported Monday a battle could be brewing between 13-game starter Nick Marshall and backup Jeremy Johnson during the network's College GameDay show.
"Nick is our starter, our guys believe in him," Lashlee said after Auburn's heartbreaking 34-31 loss to Florida State in the BCS Championship. "We have a lot of confidence in Jeremy Johnson but I don't see any reason for anybody to make something out of nothing."
Herbstreit briefly mentioned a potential battle for the starting job next spring during ESPN's pregame show.
"This spring, Gus Malzahn told me the other day, no matter what happens tonight, there's going to be a battle in the spring between Jeremy Johnson and Nick Marshall," Herbstreit said.
Marshall played one of his better games against Florida State's top-ranked defense, completing 14 of 27 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. He also rushed for 45 yards and a touchdown on 16 attempts against the Seminoles.
"I'm really proud of that young man," Lashlee said. "He got so much better each game. I thought he played brilliantly tonight. The interception he'd like to have back, the ball slipped out of his hand, probably threw it a little late, but, man, he made some big-time throws in big-time moments."
Lashlee and Malzahn have both expressed excitement concerning the prospect of Marshall's second season in the offense.
"It’s going to be a lot of fun," Malzahn said in December.
Malzahn, who just wrapped his eighth year coaching college football, has yet to coach the same starting quarterback in back-to-back years on the college level. He'll get his chance next season with Marshall, who he endorsed in the Heisman Trophy race late in the season.
Johnson was 29-fo-41 passing for six touchdowns and two interceptions as a freshman. He played in six games and started against Western Carolina because of a knee injury to Marshall.
"Watching Nick play, it's amazing," Johnson said last week. "When he's got the ball in his hands, he's unstoppable. He led this team from 3-9 to a national championship. That's pretty tough and he did it in the SEC. Just to watch him play is fun and I support him. He's like an older brother to me. I'm just sitting back and watching and learning."
Marshall finished the season with 3,044 yards of total offense, the third-most in school history. He passed for 1,976 yards and 14 touchdowns with six interceptions, and ran for 1,068 yards and 12 more scores.

Okay, next question...
How will Auburn replace Jake Holland? Who's going to be the man in the Middle behind Cassanova McKinzy?

Hopefully Garrett and Whitaker can get healthy enough to contribute and we land the Evans kid who will be hard to keep off the field opposite Therezie. Frost can play both LB positions right?
-
Okay, next question...

It is impossible to replace a legend.
-
Another question, how many players that wore #5 actually became a great player for Auburn in the past 20 years? And instead of retiring the jersey number, I'd rather hold a ceremony to bury it outside the stadium.
-
Even though we did lose the BCSNCG, I am still totally stoked about the Auburn football team. With the drive the coaches and the players have shown this year, I can only imagine the motivation these guys have to come back next season and really bust some ass.
The anticipation for the next season is big time same as last year but for far different reasons. Damn glad too.

Will Trovon Reed shine at CB this upcoming season? He was rated by a lot of recruiting experts as a top tier CB coming outta HS.
