I was just re-watching this and realized that I skipped the end of the video in my previous viewings.  When he walks into the apartment and asks his buddy what he's watching on tv, the guy says "Pharcyde" and Shad says, "Never heard of 'em".  Cracked me up...since his whole video was an homage to the video playing on the tv.

Also, check out the "Yaa, I Get It" video by Shad.  Fucking bananas.  This guy is a phenomenal rapper and does it without resorting to the standard rap music crutches: guns, drugs, hos, etc.  Shit, the guy doesn't even curse.   I've been on his bandwagon a while, and he still impresses me.

Me and a friend of mine were in a conversation about some hip hop we use to spin. The lyrical concept from Shad reminds me a lot of one rapper in particular.

Along with Goodie Mod and Outkast, the Gza from Wu-tang was one of my favs. These guys were rapping poetry not some stupid bullshit people call rap today.

His first hit "I Love College" made me initially avoid him, but I do like Asher Roth after hearing his other stuff:

Not quite hip hop, but also not interesting enough to have its own thread.  But interesting nonetheless.

New Shad is out:  Melancholy and the Infinite Shadness

Typically great rhymes over familiar songs:

1) Milli Vanilli (Girl You Know It's True!)
2) Cannonball (the Breeders)
3) It Ain't Over (Lenny Kravitz)
4) old Prince (The Tiny Purple Genius)
5) new Don (PM Dawn)

Just got recommended Stophouse.  I have no idea who these guys are, but they're pretty fucking good.  Kind of indie/grimy.  They must have some connections: Yelawolf is a guest on "Rocketman" and fucking Slug is on "Kelly Kapowski."

The new Aesop Rock is pretty good.  Not as catchy/full of hooks as None Shall Pass, but he's definitely learned to rein in the stream of consciousness that was the rule on his earlier stuff.

New album is Skelethon.

The poster child for this thread.

Fantastic album.

The puns, similes, and references display a wit not heard in at least a decade in hip hop. Not since the Marshall Mathers LP have I been so astonished that they were able to rhyme that many syllables that many times, and still say something interesting and witty. The beats are fantastic too. A subtle interpolation of "Falling Away From Me" by Korn is the backdrop for one song, while a sample of "Give it Away" by Red Hot Chilli Peppers fills another.

Listen. To. This. Album.

Thanks for this. Really solid album with 6 or 7 really good tracks.

The new Big Boi album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, is...underwhelming.

That's a total disappointment since Lucious Left Foot was so great.

I'm warming up to this after a few more listens.  It just doesn't have me craving certain songs like Left Foot did.

"Shoes for Running" has a catchy indie-pop hook.
"In the A" has solid guest spots (TI and Luda).
"Thom Pettie" has Big Boi's strongest verse on the album.
"Momma Told Me" has a nice hook courtesy of Kelly Rowland.

Just doesn't have any instant bangers like the last one.

Agreed.  Good beat and fun, smart rhymes.

Went and listened to a few more songs.  He's about 50% fun, goofy tunes and 50% somber, "message" songs.

"And We Danced" is practically a Lonely Island B-side.

Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall said, "Guys don't mind hitting Michael Vick in the open field, but when you see Cam, you have to think about how you're going to tackle him. He's like a big tight end coming at you."
