I hate Alabama. I hate their colors. I hate their dumbass mascot with a dick for a nose. I hate houndstooth. I hate everything about the university and its fans.
I heard some jackass call in yesterday to a radio show in Montgomery talking about the Spencer Region thing. Bama fan who was pissed that Region "wasn't thinking straight" and other assorted clueless typical bama rhetoric. At one point during his whining, he said something along the lines of "Auburn fans hate Alabama because they were taught to hate it, they just aren't smart enough to wake up and look around..."
That got me thinking. Nobody hates Bama any more than I do. I've refused to let people into my house who were wearing those obnoxious colors. But I wasn't raised that way. I learned it over the years because of how I saw them act and how I was treated.
My grandmother thought Bear Bryant probably shit the world. There were reasons for that adoration that I understand in retrospect, but when you're a child you can't see those kind of connections. She was my favorite person in the world.
My dad went to Alabama before he transferred to Auburn. He remained a closet Bama fan until after Bowden. He tried to play both sides and got aggravated when I said negative things about UA for years.
From the sixth grade until two years ago, I lived within 40 minutes of Tuscaloosa. I went to Alabama myself (to satisfy a girlfriend). My time there -- brief as it was -- did nothing to dampen the growing disdain I held for the place and its fans.
I had every reason in the world not to hate Bama, but I learned to. I can identify and verbalize the reasons that I hate the arrogant fucks and their bleating.
If anything my experience indicates that the reverse is true for the majority of Bama fans. They hate Auburn, but have no idea why they do.
