Intended to go see Naked Gun, but got there a little late and picked Weapons instead. Glad we did.
Didn’t know much about the film but love horror so why not? Have to admit when I saw Julia Garner’s ugly fro pop up on the screen I groaned inwardly. She has sucked the life out of every role she’s taken since she twanged it up as Ruth in Ozark.
In a surprise, she wasn’t completely terrible here. Plus there was enough going on around her that she couldn’t completely sink the film on her own. Oh, she’s still bad. The worst part of this movie. But she wasn’t given space to ruin it.
The theater was completely full for the 7:30 showing, which is encouraging to someone who loves movies and wants the theater experience to survive. If there was an empty seat after the last stragglers wandered in disrupting the first ten minutes of the film I’d be surprised.
The movie we chose was Weapons. It was a much better film than I hoped given my trepidation when I saw Julia Garner as a lead.
In addition to Ruth from Ozark, the movie also features Josh Brolin who played Thanos in the Avengers movies and Amy Madigan, who is married to Ed Harris for 40 years and been in many films/shows.
Plot wise, all I’m willing to give is that 2:17 am one morning every student in Ozark Ruth’s elementary school class got out of bed, walked out the front door, and disappeared. Every student except one, that is. Where they went is anybody’s guess.
The movie followed an unusual narrative path, similar to how Tarrantino movies are often “out of order.” But the filmmakers did a very good job of slowly piecing it all together. Had it just played chronologically from a single point of view it would not have been as compelling.
The movie did a great job of interspersing humor with the horror. That’s a positive selling point for this type of horror film. I wasn’t always sure if the director intended for the audience to laugh at some of the scenes, but that was the reaction that was generated.
