Recently diagnosed with pre-diabetes

My doctor came into the room and told me, "Hate to do this to you right before Thanksgiving, Christmas and the Super Bowl, but if you don't lose some weight (I was 255 at the time) you are going to have full on diabetes in two years."  So far I have lost 10 pounds in about 3 weeks just by cutting out sweet tea, milk, juice, and walking more.  I found out I'm pretty young for this (30, normally type 2 diabetes hits people 45 or older), and am kind of worried.  It's one thing to have 30 more healthy years when you are diagnosed at 50, another altogether when you are my age.

I was pretty depressed about it until I went to see my Dr. recommended dietitian on Monday, she told me I could have 30-60 grams of carbs per meal to keep my blood sugar under control.  Or I could go on insulin if I didn't keep it under control and face the side effects, so I have been scarfing down the turnip greens (thank God for our neighbor's garden) and pooping out things that look like this for about a week now.

It hasn't been as bad as I feared, I can even have beer as long as I drink with a meal.  The doctor recommended light beer, but I drew the line there.  You have to stand on your principles.

Anybody else out there paddling upstream in the same boat?

You meet a man on the Oregon Trail. He tells you his name is Terry. You laugh and tell him: "That's a girl's name!" Terry shoots you. You have died of dissin' Terry.

Damn, sorry to hear that.  I could be in the same boat, but I haven't been to the doctor in over a decade.  I hope everything works out for you.

Damn sorry to hear that too.  My mother has been dealing with it for a long time herself.  Diet and exercise are the keys to keeping yourself healthy; sounds like you're on the right track.

Make sure you take care of yourself and don't take your condition for granted. Diabetes is a big problem in my family. My grandfather had it (mom's dad), my mom had it, and my sister has it. I have been fortunate enough to not show any signs of it yet. My mother had heart problems from her diabetes and unexpectedly passed away back in May from it. Just stay vigilant and keep any eye on it.

My son, we really have to keep an eye on him, because not only is it on my side of the family, it is on my ex-wife's as well. Her dad, mother, and one of her brothers have it, so we test our son regularly, just for our peace of mind. My sister was diagnosed as a kid, so I know how tough juvenile diabetes can be also.

Thoughts and prayers with you.
