I did not know....realize....how old I've become.

Saw a thing on the bookfaces wishing Scott Glenn a happy 85th birthday.  1980 was the year Urban Cowboy came out.  Loved the movie, despite how cheesy it was for Travolta to make that futile attempt to pull off a "country" accent.  Definitely on par with Nicolas Cage butchering that southern gentleman dialect in Con Air. Put the bunny back in the box.

Anyway, Glenn played Wes Hightower, the total bad ass antagonist to Travolta's, "Bud Davis." He didn't have many lines in the movie, but he did tell Sissy to "Pack your shit."

I know, I know.  It's Urban Cowboy.  Spare me.  But I liked it, and Scott Glenn being 85 hurts my heart.  I'm old.

I enjoyed the viet nerm movie where he said If I am telling the truth, I'll jump out of this chopper. Then he jumped...

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

No doubt.  And so many classic lines, such as Bud tellin' Sissy:

"I'm regretful, all the way back to the first time I hit you."

If that don't bring a tear to your eye, you don't have a heartbeat.

I did not know that Manson family victim Sharon Tate was a regular on The Beverly Hillbillies, playing a secretary to banker
Milburn Drysdale.

I had forgotten Elly Mae (Donna Douglas) played opposite Elvis in Frankie and Johnny.
Mansfield was signed on with Filmways.
Trying to save her for the big screen.

There are some things you don’t appreciate until later in life.  And believe me, I’m later in life.  For instance, Seinfeld is one of, if not the most successful sitcoms of all time. Couldn’t get into it at all while it was current.  Many years later, I started watching the reruns, and now I can’t think of one I haven’t seen at least 4-5 times.

Monty Python was the same way.  Couldn’t stand English humor.  Just silly and stupid.  Didn’t find it funny in the least. Then, years later, I’m wondering what didn’t I get?  Why hasn’t this been in my life all this time?  So many classic scenes, but one of my absolute favorites is Biggus Dickus from Life of Brian. What I did not know about that scene, is that everybody was told not to laugh, but they couldn’t keep it in, so that allowed Michael Palin (Pontius Pilate) to go with it and ad lib, which helped make that bit golden.

And speaking of Life of Brian, the very premise that Jesus was the one crucified because the crowd wanted to hear Pontius Pilate say with his speech impediment, “Rewease Bawabas” is comedy jeenyus.

British humor:

Benny Hill is timeless.

I did not know he served in the British military and was at Normandy.  Or that he asked two women to marry and was rejected by both. Dropped dead in his cheap rented apartment and wasn’t found for two days.

I loved the Honeymooner reruns and Jackie Gleason. Gleason ad libbed it for the most part as he seldom rehearsed.
Up until that point America had been content with comedic duos playing off of one another or straight up joke tellers.

Brits had a quick biting dry style that they incorporated into everyday
conversation. Our family situational comedies were warm, cute and overall entertaining but American's as a whole were simply boring, possibly because of religious piety.

Thank God for Jews who were funny in spite of their beliefs or we would be bereft of any and all humor- much like we have today with the feeling Nazi's deciding what is appropriate.

As a teen I loved "the Holy Grail"  because it was this troupe throwing the kitchen sink into comedy. It was irreverent, historically inaccurate and combined all forms of humor. So there was something for everyone... including fart jokes if that was your bag.

And for the record, I never found Friends to be funny.
Seinfeld was a far funnier sitcom and it's not even debatable.

Different strokes.  Wait, not the sitcom.  Friends is one of those comedies that people are almost embarrassed to admit they watched.  I did just to see Jennifer Aniston's nipples, which were constantly on display.

Seinfeld is a great show.  Great writing.  The way they tied things together.

Friends? An abomination. Not a single funny moment in the few episodes I’ve watched.  And they are admittedly very few.

Seinfeld.  Cheers.  Frasier. News Radio. Night Court (to a much lesser degree). The Office.

Those are great shows.

I’d flick them.  But she never did it for me that much.  She was cute.  But that cute didn’t overcome the nausea invoked by Ross the Cuck and Phoebe the Freak.

More I did not know…

Julie Benz (Rita on Dexter), who I completely adore, and because of whom I won’t watch anything with John Lithgow in it ….  She used to be married to The Cryptkeeper.  Well…. Technically to the guy who did the voice.

Married when she was 26 and he was 42.
