If Obama wins and attempts to completely derail the foundation of America, are there not checks and balances to prevent this?
Even with complete control of congress and the white house, aren't there unions that can prevent this from turning into a clusterfuck of bad policies that will result in the downfall of our country?

Yes, there are checks and balances within the U. S. government that are designed to limit the power of each branch of the government (executive, judicial, and legislative) however the checks and balances are also designed to encourage the branches to work together. Should The Obama win this election and should the Democrats win a more substantive majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate then, ideologically, they will all see eye-to-eye (as succinctly stated by Ogre in his post).
The only other branch that could "balance and check" what the executive and legislative branches do is the judicial branch (e.g. the Supreme Court) and it's ideology depends on how Associate Justice Kennedy is feeling that day or what side of the bed he woke up on (left or right).
Within the Congress the Senate and the House have to see eye-to-eye in order to pass a bill (which will become a law if signed by the President). The minority party in the Senate may use the fillibuster procedure to stop a bill IF they have MORE than 40 members to deny the majority the so-called "super majority" of 60 (or more). Right now the Senate is balanced with 49
Democrat socialists, 1 real socialist (Bernie Sanders of Vermont), 1 independent Democrat (Joe Lieberman), and 49 Republicans (6 to 9 of whom are in serious jeopardy of loosing their seats today). The Senate could hold-off The Obama if the
Democrats socialists don't gain too many more seats today.
Odds are the Republicans will loose 4 to 6 seats in the Senate.
What, exactly, are the policies he is pushing that will "derail the foundation of America"? Jeezus, the hysteria is at an all-time high.
Look, this guy is going to disappoint lots of people who vote for him. He can't be the architect of sweeping change that he's painted himself to be because of the deeply ingrained culture of Washington that abhors any actual, substantive change. The lobbyists are out of a (very, very well paying) job if there is any more than a minor gap in policy positions. They aren't going to let that gravy train make a last stop. There is too much inertia for Obama to turn the ship around mid-stream.

I think that I've worked through my hysteria about The Obama winning but you can bet on higher levels of confiscatory taxation, some kind of universal FedGov care that we'll all have in some way (supported by the confiscatory taxes that us tax-
payers will be paying in order to spread the wealth around, infringments on our second amendment rights, and probably immediate attacks on our first amendment rights with regards to alternative media. They'll figure out some way to tax the internet (especially internet commerce). They'll also change our foreign policy procedures to the point of weakening our positions in order to make the global community
happy with us again. Deference to the UN will be the order of the day in foreign policy. Lastly they'll do what they always do and that is to eviscerate the military. Those are just a few things for starters.
But, other than that everything will be fine.
