Is there some legal requirement that GPS directions absolutely must, without fail, take you through the shittiest, most run down, most dilapidated, most dangerous part of every town?

It has to do with quotas and what not. But, at least it announces a potentially life ending turn 25 feet after you've passed it.

It's trying to kill me.  Took me down three different roads in Arkansas named for Dr King.

Then in a blinding rain storm it turned me onto a gravel road that quickly turned into barely one lane with cornfields on both sides. Several miles in the road switched to straight dirt. Turn around? Not possible. So kept sliding forward.  Rain slowed but slogging on through the mud, afraid to slow down much thinking that getting stuck was a real option. Buried back in there the fields opened up a little and there was a ramshackle shed, green with age. Old man maybe 90 lbs with thick glasses, dirty work clothes and a greasy trucker hat sitting on a dilapidated couch.  I watched the Wrong Turn and Texas Chainsaw movies. Kept grinding.

Eventually came to a 2 lane road. Got on it against the GPS directions. Used my phone to look up where I was. When my truck GPS demanded that I turn onto another red clay road, this one with an open gate? I turned it off.

Don't know about Google's efforts to kill whitey, but I'm fucking convinced that they're in bed with the toll-road operators.

I take the FL Turnpike to/through Orlando frequently.  If you're not an Orlando regular: the place is fucking lousy with toll roads.  First couple of times, I put my hotel location in (downtown Orlando, Embassy Suites) and navigate the 145 toll roads that I'm instructed to take before reaching my destination.

After a few trips to Mouse-town, I got comfortable with the layout and started forging my own paths.  Turns out the fucking turnpike crosses I-4 just west of downtown.

Ergo, I did not need to take any separate toll roads the entire time.

I would go so far as to say that Tom-Tom and Garmin changed the way we drive to places we've never been.  They put a huge dent in Rand McNalley's pocket and single handedly caused more traffic accidents than any passenger side navigator ever has...Icons in my book!!    Everybody immediately thinks of one if not both of them when they hear "in 2.7 miles, turn left".

I wouldn't say tom tom and garmin are iconic. But their navigation voices are. They started a new genre.

I just know that I'm sick and tired of fitbit.  It's the most inaccurate tracking device that I've ever seen.  I've ran the same damn route 15 times in 2 months and it hasn't had the same distance twice.  Anywhere from 5.8 to 6.7.

Honest truth?

Its because Fitbit and other products like it are "fitness tracking toys" with lots of graphs and cute metrics. They are not a scientific positioning device. Garmin has its flaws but they have this shit nailed down as good as anyone.
