I think Avery Johnson is an interesting hire for Alabama.  High recognition, but high risk as well. If the guy can't run a college program, if he's not a college coach (both of which are complete unknowns) he could set the program back a decade or more.

I'm sure he's energetic and outgoing, but he seems -- to me at least -- a little unhinged and out of control.

That's not what I'm reading in the hundreds of articles (five or six about playing pickup basketball games with Saban) on al.com.  The prevailing theories there go something like this:

1) Alabama nearly hired Rodriguez, but got Saban instead.  Since they whiffed on Gregg Marshall that automatically makes Johnson the equivalent of Saban.

2) Nick Saban failed as an NFL coach. John Calipari failed as an NBA coach. That automatically makes Johnson, who failed miserably at New Jersey, the equivalent of Saban or Calipari.

3) Johnson has a son who plays at Texas A&M, therefore he understands everything about recruiting and will be able to recruit like no other coach in the history of the game.

4) Johnson isn't scared of Nick Saban and he said turning Alabama into Duke was his goal. Therefore Final Fours are a given.

5) With this hire, Bill Battle has now become Mal Moore reincarnated. He's the most amazing athletic director on the planet.

I get that Johnson's an interesting hire, but I simply don't understand the hundreds of articles spooging on his back.  I can't believe nobody's questioning the hire at all.  About as far as they get with questioning it is "he's never coached at the collegiate level, but he was NBA coach of the year and has a NICKNAME!  Little General is his nickname and because of that he's going to be able to recruit, dominate, ....."

All I saw in the hire was that they found the shortest coach possible, so Saban might feel normal walking around the athletic complex.

Saban:  Come in, Coach Johnson.  Close the door, aiight.

CAJ:  Nice office you got here.

Saban: What the hell is wrong with your voice?

CAJ:  What?

Saban:  Huh? Oh nothing.  Listen, I wanted to talk to you.  Pick your brain for a minute.  When you decided to take this job....exactly what in God's name were you thinking?  Have you seen our fans?  Did you even look at Coleman Coliseum before you said yes?  It has stripes on the ceiling.

CAJ:  Well, I didn't really think I needed to see the fans before...

Saban:  Big mistake

CAJ:  And they promised a new basketball arena would be....

Saban:  They told you that too?  BWAAHAHAHA....  Look son, anything that might potentially take money away from me and the process goes through me first.  I have veto power, aiight? And as long as I'm here, you ain't gettin' no new arena, aiight?

CAJ:  But they said it was already in the works.

Saban:  Damn son, how gullible are you?  And how are you going to lead young men talking to them with that voice?  You sound like Mickey Mouse and Kermit the Frog's love child.

CAJ:  What?

Saban:  Huh? Oh nothing.

My doctor told me I needed to stop masturbating.  I asked him why, and he said, "because I'm trying to examine you."

Five statements of WISDOM
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity, by legislating the wealth out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friends, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

He set Dallas back a few years.

Don't be ridiculous!  He was the best coach in the history of the franchise.  Mark Cuban was an idiot for letting him go.  Every NBA program in the country wanted him.  He's been hotly pursued since he left coaching and was just waiting for the right opportunity.

The only part of his interview I listened to was the part where he thanked his college coach.  It was hilarious to me.

He called him a "farter figger"

That's going to be my new title on my business cards. "Farter Figger"
