I know nothing of this type of rescue but it appears the plan all along was for the lead man to get the inside door opened to the hostages which he clearly did. He managed to get it done and exit amongst a hail of gunfire in what seemed like fifteen seconds.

Honestly, rule number one of hostage anything is "it sucks to be a hostage". If the bad guys really wanna kill 'em and aren't total morons they're gonna succeed. But as token mentioned if the ops plan was "okay, send steve in with a shield and we'll just hang around outside" the french don't have shit for tactics and steve has huge brass balls hidden by that shield.

What really happened is guy number 2 in the left stack and guy number one in the right stack decided maybe gunfights aren't for them right after rounds started popping off. Which is a pretty understandable reaction, unless you're steve.
