Good Country Music Still Exists
« on: July 28, 2014, 12:25:56 PM »
I keed.  As I texted a couple of you the past couple of days, I took the wife to see Luke Bryan Friday night in Atlanta.  She's in love with the man and wants to have his babies so I gave her the tix as a gift.  Have to admit it was a damn good show.  I know we've had a lot of debate over what "country" music is or has become but that's not the point here.  Sometimes, it's just a matter of watching a live performance and getting the opportunity to see some awesome musicians up close.  We were dead center with the stage about 4 rows back so that was definitely the case.

Two opening acts with Cole Swindell and Lee Brice.  I've played the guitar all my life so I pay more attention to what's going on there than the actual artist most of the time.  And you can imagine that these record companies are marketing the stars, but they damn well make sure they're backed up by the best musicians they can find.  But I also have to admit that both Brice and Bryan are pretty good musicians in their own right.  Brice ripped up several leads during his set and Bryan played the piano, acoustic and electric guitars quite well.

Just an observation on the crowd.  Two nights, both sold out for the 20,000 seat amphitheater.  The best thing I can compare it to is an Auburn football game.  Walking to the venue, it was mostly young, college age kids tailgating, music playing, cooking out, drinking heavily and every girl there had the little sundress on with cowboy boots. Just a typical Fall Saturday afternoon on the Plains.  I'm not a big country music fan and I'm not running out and buying any Luke Bryan CD's. (The wife already downloaded all of it) But overall, it was an entertaining night watching young girls in sundresses, drinking cold Sweetwater 420's on draft and watching some killer musicians.  I'd consider another one.

Don't disrespect the Twitty Birds.  He would have been nothing without them.

Nice, yes. But it's hard to beat Boots Randolph in the wind instrument category.

If you don't think you like country, listen to these bands. Also, if you do like country but never heard of some of these, check them out.

Hurray for the Riff Raff
Trampled By Turtles
Lydia Loveless
Cuff the Duke
The White Buffalo
Neko Case
Jason Isbell
Drive-By Truckers
honeyhoney
Old Crow Medicine Show
The Avett Brothers
Old 97's
The Civil Wars
Amanda Shaw

Kacey Musgraves & Jamey Johnson are a little too on the pop-country side for my taste, but still pretty good.

And unless anyone wants to see Hank III with me at House of Blues in New Orleans next Saturday, I'll probably be going by myself.

Well if many of them want to be heard beyond you tube they have to align with a recognizable genre.

Jose Feliciano, doesn't get much better.

Exactly, Van Morrison grunts out country lyrics. Griffin House resides in Nashville. They have to find a niche be it due to age or in House's case translation because his songs are pop which works for country if you wear the hat, even moreso with a twang.

Hank III is quite the little badass. I like him.

Jamey Johnson seems like a cool dude too. Keeps it real.

I had forgotten until last night that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played on damn new every song on his "Unchained" album.

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."
