Haters gonna' hate.
It is an obsessive, visceral, unhinged, and passionate hatred that cannot be completely expressed in language; I think I'd root for the Witch King of Angmar and all the orcs in Mordor before I'd support Duke. I think the only time I'd actually cheer for Duke is if they were playing against al Qaeda.
But, having written that, former Duke player (and current Atlanta Hawks player), Elton Brand, upon leaving Duke early in his college career, has been quoted as saying:
"Thank you very much, for reminding me of the reason why I left Duke.
People like you cannot and will not ever understand my situation. I'm sure Daddy
worked very hard to send your rich self to college. While real people struggle.
I would also like to extend an invitation for you not to waste your or my time ever again.
Never being considered a part of your posh group of yuppies really hurts me to the heart.
Yeah, Right! Because I don't care about you or your alumni."My dissertation on my hate of Duke could go on, I hate the shiny-suited, slicked-back hair, empty suits on ESPN and CBS Sports who LOVE Duke and always defer to them or Coach K, including the fawning Dick Vitale and Jay Bilas and Mike Gminski...
And to quote from Ian Williams from his famous column, "Why I hate Duke" published in 'The Daily Tar Heel in 1990:
"...
Now I realize that school spirit is a pretty goofy thing to some people, but I’ll tell you something: I hate Duke with an infernal passion undying. I hate every leaf of every tree on that sickening campus. I hate every fake cherub Gothic piece of crap that litters the buildings like hemorrhoidal testaments to imagined superiority. When I see those Dookie boneheads shoe-polishing their faces navy blue on television, squandering their parents’ money with their fratty elitist bad sportsmanship antics and Saab stories, I want to puke all over Durham.
...
G*d bless them Tar Heel boys!"G*d Bless us indeed.
