AUBURN, Alabama – Auburn is expected to continue its coaching search off Broadway, apparently deciding to forgo its annual trip to New York for the National Football Foundation's Hall of Fame banquet where interviews are often conducted and deals are often struck.

That decision indicates the school will work the next few days with a short list of candidates that likely includes Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn and Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher, according to people familiar with the process. Auburn is unlikely to reach a decision until after today's games which include Malzahn, Fisher, TCU coach Gary Patterson and Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. A limited number of interviews could take place Sunday, or perhaps Monday, with the introduction of the new coach coming early in the week.

It is unclear when or if Auburn contacted former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino or whether he has been interviewed.

One of the candidates Auburn reached out to earlier in the week, Louisville head coach Charlie Strong, interviewed with Tennessee on Friday, according to Volquest.com. Also, Yahoo! Sports, citing industry sources, reported today Auburn, North Carolina State and Purdue have expressed interest in Northern Illinois coach Dave Doeren.

Auburn's search committee of Athletics Director Jay Jacobs, former Heisman Trophy winners Bo Jackson and Pat Sullivan, and former player Mac Crawford has quietly laid the groundwork to hire a new coach. The search committee's list may include names that have not been discussed by the media.

The National Football Foundation draws many college football head coaches for three days of meetings, shopping and to renew acquaintances. Auburn conducted interviews in New York four years ago before hiring Gene Chizik. The school also agreed to restructure Tommy Tuberville's contract in 2007 in New York. Athletic officials could change its plans and travel to New York, if needed.
