Auburn Round Hoops Quick Preview
« on: October 01, 2012, 11:19:53 AM »
This year's version of the juggernaut that is, Auburn basketball, will feature a nice mix of veterans, first timers and JUCO help.  In looking at the Auburn University Athletcs site, just making some assumptions as to who might be in the playing rotations.  It's hard to know with so many new faces, who will thrive at this level and who is overmatched.  First off, Auburn should be solid at the guard position as senior Frankie Sullivan returns for his 11th year.  Former walk-on, Josh Wallace is back along with Chris Denson.

Joining this trio are two incoming freshman who come in with nice credentials and apparently some serious athletic ability.  Jordan Price is a 6'5" 230 lb. guard who averaged 22 points and 7 rebounds.  In addition, he shot over 45% from 3-point range. 6'3" 205 Brian Greene, Jr. 15/6 also averaged over 40% from the arc.  Incidentally, Greene, Jr. who is described as having an incredible work ethic and a "gym rat", also has the same vertcal leap, 39", as incoming highlight reel, Shaquille Johnson.  The biggest thing that stands out to me though for these two is the 3-point shootiing.  AU hasn't had a consistent threat from the outside in years and hopefully one, or both, can give Barbee someone he can count on from long range.

Inside, 6'10 240 Rob Chubb also returns for his 11th year and desperately needs to give this team a scoring presence on the interior.  JUCO transfer Asauhn Dixon-Tatum is a defensive specialist who goes 7'0" and 230.  A great shot blocker at the JUCO level, he was also able to contribute right at 10 points per game.  If he and Chubb can do the dirty work inside, it should really help another JUCO transfer, 6'8" 223 lb. Sharief Adams.  Freshmen, Jordan Granger, a 6'8" slasher who was the 5A Player of the Year in Missouri, and 6'5" leaper, Shaquille Johnson will hopefully be able to make contributions right off the bat.

The Tigers should get plenty of experience against quality competition prior to the start of the SEC slate with a schedule that includes games and tournaments with teams like, St. John's, Baylor, Boston College, Colorado, Dayton, Illinois and FSU.  Yes, there's plenty of youth but also a ton of Juniors and Seniors that have been there and done that.  It would seem that if several of these newcomers can live up to some of the hype coming in, AU might finally be able to make a legitimate run at the Big Dance.

You meet a man on the Oregon Trail. He tells you his name is Terry. You laugh and tell him: "That's a girl's name!" Terry shoots you. You have died of dissin' Terry.

Raff ow Rowd. They do suck.

But....I do have a sneaky suspicion they might be fun to watch this year.  I still like Barbee as a coach and hope he's worked through the issues with players staying, going etc.  It was a yearly thing under Lebo to lose 2-3 players and so far, it's been that way with Barbee.  But this looks like a good group of upper classmen with some young studs coming in.  Probably suck again but right now, we're undefeated.

Nice thing about college b-ball these days is that all you need to compete is one or two guys with experience and some uber-athletic youngsters and you can do some damage.

Wizzerd.  Can't recall the guy's name that transferred out this past year.  Tall, skinny dude that came in and blocked shots.  Couldn't score at all but could make things tough for a few minutes inside.  It looks like this 7 footer has some meat on his bones and has at least decent skills if the write up is correct.

Typically, I just want Auburn to reach the NIT.  Would love the NCAA, but would take the NIT

I've changed my wants with Auburn Basketball, I'd just like the same lineup two years in a row.

I like this guy. A write up from the AU Athletics site on Brian Greene, Jr. AU basketball has obviously been snake-bitten for the past decade or more with poor coaching and huge turnover in the roster every year.  Keeping what few top flight players we sign has been an issue since Lebo took over and continued under Barbee.  However, I'm still on Barbee's bandwagon.  I like his style.  I like that he is genuinely trying to move this program forward, both through his recruiting and publicizing/hyping AU roundball.  Keeping guys like Greene is a must.

By: Evan Roberts, Auburn Media Relations

For Auburn incoming freshman Brian Greene Jr., basketball has always been his first love. Although he grew up playing football and basketball, Greene followed in his sister's, Delisa Greene, footsteps and decided to play basketball not only in high school, but in a college as well.

"I started playing at a really young age around fourth grade," Greene said. "My sister played in high school at Washington High in Chicago and in college at Robert Morris. She was pretty good, so I would go to the gym with her every chance I could to improve my game. I love coming to practice."

After his senior year in high school where he was named to the first-team All-Area and Team MVP, Greene decided to spend a year at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Greene carried IMG to a 37-2 record after averaging 15.5 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists per game, but the Chicago, Ill., native saw his biggest improvement come off the court. "My year at IMG was incredible," Greene claimed. "It helped me mature on and off the court. I became a man and a more independent person. I was able to get away from mom and dad and away from the family which really helped out."

Greene's improvement last season caught the eye of several Div. I coaches, but ultimately chose Auburn because of his relationships with Coach Tony Barbee and his staff.

"I really enjoy the coaches here," Greene said. "It is a great environment. I have a great opportunity to prove myself. Coach Barbee's system is perfect for me. It is fast and up tempo that allows you to use your athleticism and get past your defender." During summer workouts, Greene's hard work and determination solidified Barbee's belief in Greene after he stayed in the gym, trying to perfect his game.

"I think probably the surprise of the newcomers who have been in practice this summer has been Brian Greene," Barbee said. "He has really stood out as a guy who has an unbelievable work ethic. He stays in the gym. He loves it. He is a gym rat. He is every coach's kind of dream. He will give us great depth at that point guard position with great size and great athleticism at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds a guy who is as fast as Josh Wallace, jumps like Shaquille Johnson and has the ability to score and run the team from the point guard position."

Greene has already gained as much knowledge as he can from fellow point guard and senior walk-on Josh Wallace, who played in all 31 games last season.

"Josh is doing a really nice job helping me out and showing me the ropes," said Greene. "Josh is a really mature and a good vocal leader. That is one thing that I need to work on is being more vocal. At this level, you need to talk."

As one of only two true point guards on the team, Greene hopes to get a lot of playing time, and if he does, he knows he will be ready for the spotlight.

"I won't be nervous," Greene said. "It is basketball no matter what. Obviously you are going to get nervous in your first collegiate game. I remember my first ever varsity practice in high school, and I was nervous, but once you get into the flow, it is just basketball and those nerves go away. I just want to win games and championships. I didn't come here to be average and finish in the middle of the pack in the SEC. We are trying to win it, and see where that takes us."

Greene was recently named to Jon Rothstein of the CBS Sports Network's "20 under the radar freshman for the 2012-13 college basketball season."

I am decently optimistic about the bball team this year...but our athletic department is a mess...

Quote
Auburn's Tiger Hoops Madness basketball event has been canceled for this year, AuburnSports.com has learned.

The event was originally scheduled for Friday, October 12, the night before Auburn's road football game at Ole Miss. However, due to attendance concerns the night before a road football game, the date was tentatively re-scheduled to Friday, October 26, the night before Auburn's home football game against Texas A&M.

But Auburn baseball's Home Run Derby event was already scheduled for Friday, October 26. Now, there will be no basketball event.

There may an open scrimmage on Saturday, October 27 before the 6 p.m. CT kickoff against Texas A&M.

Tony Barbee and the basketball team began practice last Friday with the deepest, most talented roster Barbee and his staff have enjoyed in their previous two seasons.

Fifth-year senior Frankie Sullivan returns as Auburn's leading scorer at 12.6 ppg. Rob Chubb added 8.1 points and 5.1 rebounds and a healthy Noel Johnson, who went 6-of-14 from 3-point range in the final four games of the season, will add scoring punch.

A recruiting class that was ranked third in the SEC will help Barbee's rebuilding project immensely as top 100 recruits and incoming freshmen guards Jordan Price and Shaquille Johnson both are from metro Atlanta. Guard Brian Greene, Jr., 6-foot-9 forward Jordan Granger, 7-foot center Asauhn Dixon-Tatum and 6-foot-8 forward Shareif Adamu round out the highly-rated class. KT Harrell, a standout guard, will redshirt this season after transferring from Virginia but will be a vital scout team member.
