We're not the only ones with problem children
« on: August 27, 2012, 12:48:15 PM »
Here's a nice little list of other schools going through the same crap as us.

Coaches talk about how there’s always a slight moment of panic every time the phone rings. They like to be able to prepare for every circumstance and every situation, but when a top player has a moment of oops, all the hopes and dreams for the season quickly change.

It’s a reality of life in college football that every offseason will be littered with stories of star players getting in trouble with the law, and more and more in a world of camera phones, social networking and Penn State, no one is able to get away with anything and coaches aren’t able to sweep problems under the rug like they could a few decades ago.

Even with all the instant access to information in today’s day and age, coaches are always going to be as tight-lipped as possible when it comes to suspending players, especially top ones, to leave the door open in case they might return. Hence the always-nebulous "Violation Of Team Rules" as an explanation for why a player isn’t going to be on the field against Cupcake U. to start the season.

What does it mean when a player violates team rules? Maybe the guy was caught smoking something interesting, maybe he's about to flunk out of Intro To Basket Weaving, maybe he's going diva in practices and needs to be taught a lesson, or maybe he was arrested after drinking/driving/dating or all of the above.

Welcome to the 2012 All-Problems Team, highlighting many of the top players who got into hot water this offseason.

QB -- Tommy Rees, Notre Dame

While it was going to be a fight to get the starting job that ended up reportedly going to Everett Golson, Rees was going to be a No. 1 option before getting suspended for the trip to Ireland against Navy after his legal issues following a party.

RB -- Montee Ball, Wisconsin

The Heisman finalist wasn't suspended and didn't get in any real hot water, but he was ticketed for trespassing at a block party. Later in the summer he was hospitalized following an "unprovoked assault."

RB -- Isaiah Crowell, Georgia

The one-time star recruit was kicked off the team after being arrested on weapons charges.

Super-talented Isaiah Crowell was kicked off the Georgia team.

RB -- De’Andre Johnson, Iowa

The possible starter adds to the Spinal Tap drummer-like legend or problems when it comes to Iowa running backs. He was dismissed after being arrested twice in three days and being charged with eluding police.

RB -- James Sims, Kansas

The team’s best running back is out for the first three games after being arrested for an offseason DUI.

RB -- Fitzgerald Toussaint, Michigan

Nailed with a drunken driving charge, he was suspended from the team this offseason. A decision hasn’t been made on his status for the opener against Alabama.

WR -- Duron Carter, Florida Atlantic

Cris Carter’s tremendously talented son started his career at Ohio State, had eligibility problems, transferred to Alabama, never became eligible, transferred to Florida Atlantic, and now is waiting to see if he’s able to play.

WR -- Trey Franks & Jaz Reynolds, Oklahoma

Two of the key parts of the Sooner passing game have been in the Bob Stoops doghouse all offseason. They’re back in the mix and reinstated, but they haven’t been told when they’re going to see game action.

WR -- Kofi Hughes, Indiana

The team’s top target will miss a game for violation of team rules.

Tennessee's Da'Rick Rogers is the latest big name to run into trouble.

WR -- Da’Rick Rogers, Tennessee

One of the SEC’s best receivers and All-America candidate was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. It’s being reported that he violated the university’s substance abuse policy.

WR -- Devon Smith, Penn State

The Nittany Lions don’t have a passing game and lost top receiver Justin Brown to Oklahoma. Smith was kicked off the team this summer after being arrested for drug possession.

WR -- Brandon Turner, Navy

Navy’s best receiver isn’t suspended, but he’s on watch after not showing up in shape.

WR -- Marquel Wade, Arkansas

Arrested after he, tight end Andrew Peterson and fellow receiver Maudrecus Humphrey were arrested for stealing from dorm rooms.

WR -- Sammy Watkins, Clemson

The uber-talented future NFL star was suspended for the first two games of the season after getting caught with marijuana and pills during a traffic stop.

TE -- Jamal Mosley, Ole Miss

One of the team’s top tight ends is suspended indefinitely after being arrested and charged with disturbing the peace.

TE/WR -- Jake Stoneburner, Ohio State

He’s back for the season-opener against Miami (OH) after being suspended for the offseason due to an arrest.

OL -- Michel Bowie, Oklahoma State

The possible starting left tackle was kicked off the team for violating team rules.

OL -- Stan Hasiak, Oregon State

The former UCLA Bruin was supposed to be in the mix for a starting job but hasn’t been able to get his grades in order.

OL -- Juantez Hollins, Pitt

The starter won’t play this year after being suspended for violating team rules.

OL -- Kolton Houston, Georgia

The likely starting tackle is suspended indefinitely after testing positive for a banned substance.

OT -- Jack Mewhort, Ohio State

The tackle is back in the mix after being suspended this summer for violating team rules after being arrested.

DL -- Gerald Rivers, Ole Miss

Projected to play a big role in the end rotation, he was dismissed because of academic problems.

DL -- Justin Washington, Arizona

The starter was suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules.

LB -- Daniel Cobb, Texas Tech

The starter was kicked off the team after being arrested on felony burglary charges.

LB -- Daniel Drummond, Georgia Tech

The projected starter was charged with a BUI -- boating under the influence -- and is suspended for the first game of the year.

LB -- Storm Klein, Ohio State

The likely starter was kicked off the team this offseason after being charged with domestic violence and assault. However, was allowed back on the team, with a two game suspension, after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

LB -- Trent Mackey, Tulane

The best linebacker in Conference USA was arrested for allegedly being a part of an armed robbery. His lawyer is claiming there’s evidence to prove Mackey’s innocence.

LB -- Chase Vasser, Georgia

The projected key part of the linebacker rotation is out for the first two games after being charged with a DUI.

LB -- Cecil Whiteside, California

The expected starter was booted for a violation of team rules.

DB -- Ray-Ray Armstrong, Miami

Arguably the best safety in college football, the star pro prospect was let go after issues with NCAA rules and improper contact with boosters. He enrolled at something called Faulkner University.

DB -- Nikolas Brassel, Ole Miss

Possibly the team’s best all-around player at either corner or receiver, the tremendous athlete is academically ineligible.

DB -- O’Neill Chambers, BYU

After being suspended in 2010 and out all of last year, he appeared to be ready to make a huge impact for the Cougar secondary after a strong spring. Coach Bronco Mendenhall didn’t let him back on the team.

DB -- Sanders Commings, Georgia

The terrific starting corner is out for the first two games of the season after being charged with domestic violence.

DB -- Curtis Drake, Penn State

One of the team’s best all-around athletes was dismissed after having academic problems.

DB -- Tyrann Mathieu, LSU

The Heisman finalist was suspended from the team last year for drug use. He got booted off the team this year for the same. Technically, he’s gone after violating team rules.

DB/PR -- Greg Reid, Florida State

The All-America returner and burgeoning defensive back was kicked off the team for a violation of team rules.

DB -- David Sperry, Navy

The team’s best corner was kicked off the team for violating team rules.

Only Auburn has players that get in trouble...domestic violence, eluding the police, failed drug test, DUI? Psssh, that's nothing, only walking home from a bar, intoxicated, is worthy of suspension or being kicked off the team.
