Another brand new brewery in Birmingham
Posted Dec. 20, 2011 By Andy McWhorter
In the past few years, craft beer in Birmingham seems to have gone from distant idea to a genuine institution. Once upon a time, The J. Clyde was one of the few places in town that served small-batch, craft ale regularly. The landscape has changed somewhat since then. Good People Brewing Company has, as their cans proudly state, been “brewed legally since 2008.” After months of anticipation, Avondale Brewing Company opened its doors earlier this year to the joy of many. The J. Clyde is still Mecca for Birmingham’s beer aficionados, but there are a few more local brews on tap than there were in the past.
With the future looking brighter for craft beer in Birmingham, a new player is entering the arena. Cahaba Brewing Company is setting up shop at 2616 Third Avenue South, right next to the future home of HopCity, a craft beer and wine shop originally from Atlanta. As their Facebook page says, Cahaba Brewing Company has “Beer so fresh it isn’t even made yet.” The owners of the brewery are hoping it won’t stay that way for long though.

Eric Meyer, manager and brewer of Cahaba Brewing Company, standing in front of the brewery's new coolers.
“I’m hoping in February, 2012,” said Eric Meyer, one of the owners and brewers of Cahaba Brewing Company, when asked when the brewery might begin production. “I would love to have beer brewing by the Super Bowl this year.” Meyer says that the idea for the company first started during the 2011 Super Bowl, so having a producing brewery one year later would be a major accomplishment for him, Taylor DeBoer and Andy Gwaltney, Meyer’s fellow brewers and owners. Don’t start marking your calendar quite yet though. “We still have to set up the equipment and do some runs through it,” Meyer said. “Everyone in the industry says it’ll be about six months after you think it will be ready.”

Cahaba Brewing Company hopes to open its doors early 2012.
Time tables aside, Cahaba Brewing Company is ambitious about their future in the craft beer community. “We’re going to come out with a sessionable beer that’s going to be different from what anyone else in town has,” Meyer said. “We like to say around the brewery, ‘Small batch, big craft.’”
There is no word as to what, specifically, that beer might be when Cahaba Brewing Company opens its doors to the public, but keep an eye on the horizon for another addition to Birmingham’s growing craft beer scene.
