Eat a lot of good food, go see some naked women and get really shit faced every night because you're walking, not driving.

Other than that, I can't think of much else to do.  Haven't been there in about 10 years so I don't know what's down there anymore.  I do hear a bunch of folks talking about Emiril's restaurant...Commanders?  But take money.

My doctor told me I needed to stop masturbating.  I asked him why, and he said, "because I'm trying to examine you."

Watch your ass too. Some friends that have been lately have said it is pretty rough since Katrina.

I thought we had moved all the New Orleans rough element to Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta?

"Hey my friends are the ones that wanted to eat at that shitty hole in the wall that only served bread and wine.  What kind of brick and mud business model is that.  Stick to the cart if that's all you're going to serve.  Then that dude came in with like 12 other people, and some of them weren't even wearing shoes, and the restaurant sat them right across from us. It was gross, and they were all stinky and dirty.  Then dude starts talking about eating his body and drinking his blood...I almost lost it.  That's the last supper I'll ever have there, and I hope he dies a horrible death."

Just a new set of roughians. Lots of people from all over fighting over work and everything else.
They basically swamped the job market. It happened here too after Ivan. Most have moved on from here though so things are close to normal. It was fucked up here so I can believe it in NO.

The crime isn't bad in the quarter.  Just keep your doors locked on Canal Street.

I went there a few weekends ago to visit family, and it still has all the great sites.

I definitely recommend hitting up Mother's on the corner of Poydras and Tchoupitoulas.  They've got great Cajun cuisine, but it's the Po Boys that will leave you smiling.

If you want to have fun on Bourbon Street, just drink until you can't feel your face.  Hit up a few of the jazz clubs on the strip.

Whatever you do, do NOT go too far down the road.  You'll hit the drag queen/gay section.  I wouldn't want you wake up with a broad named Jim.

With you not knowing Jumbo I went ahead and fixed part of your post.

I went twice last year and I'm going back next month.  The Quarter is pretty safe (standard city rules still apply) because they need the tourist dollars badly.

Eats:
Cafe Maspero (Toulouse & Decatur): fried seafood platter is enormous (and relatively inexpensive), red beans and rice are quality, and $1 PBR draft.

Port of Call (Esplanade & Dauphine): get a burger...that is all.

Central Grocery (Decatur near the French Market): the original Mufaletta...you have to have one.

There are as many restaurants catering to as many budgets as you can imagine.  Just drop in some shady looking place and give it a shot.

Drinks: During the day almost every bar on Bourbon runs a variation of the "Buy 1 get 2 Free" special.  You'll be drunk quickly.  Avoid the gimmick drinks (handgranade at Tropical Isle/Pat O's Hurricane)...they are overpriced and watered down.

Off the beaten path drinking: Ryan's Irish Pub, Chart Room, Napoleon House (a little more uppity, so don't make this one a late night drunk stop).

Strip Bars: Just avoid Big Daddy's...I know it's a landmark, but the talent is untalented and the one drink minimum is a way overpriced small glass of warm beer.

That's what I've got off the top of  my head.

Life can really kick your ass.  I only have a vague recollection of when it wasn't kickin' mine.

I also wanted to add -

Stay away from the French Market.  It has nothing but silly ass girly shit that's ridiculously overpriced.  Also, the food section of the market hasn't been rebuilt yet.  If you want to check it out just to say you've been there, then go, but the market was weak.

Now, wait a minute.  I was young, and I needed the money...  OOPS, wrong topic!

Back in 2000, the handgrenades weren't watered down.  Of course, I haven't had any since then, but I remember things... and don't remember more things...

As far as recommendations go, don't walk into the Bottomless Club with a credit card.  One of my drunk friends had a $250 charge changed to $25,000 after he signed the slip.  He was only able to get it negotiated down to $2,500 after arguing for months and months.  By the way, that was the same night we drank those handgrenades.

Coop's Place used to have crawfish by the hour for fairly cheap. Right before your time was up, they threw you a few more pounds on the table.
Good food at a good price.
The guy that owns Coop's also owns Cosimo's and offers food from their menu.

Go to the NoName bar and check out the bras and buy a jar of cherry bombs. Cherries soaked in PGA.
