I got absolutely engrossed in a documentary yesterday afternoon called Rise of the Third Reich.  All this time, I just thought it was mostly the charismatic Hitler who rose to prominence at the right time and the people fell for his rhetoric.  I knew it wasn't that simple but I had no idea how deep and systematic a plan over the course of 5-6 years that was carried out.  The ethnic cleansing, the mindless followers who pledged their very being, their souls to Hitler. 

The world saw what had become probably the greatest country on earth, industry thriving, beautiful landscape/architecture, happy vibrant people.  The reality was that slowly but surely, they were being brainwashed and suckered into his plan of world dominance.  Yes, the guy was crazy and I hope he continues to burn in hell.  But the brilliance of it all to get so many millions, including Austria, to buy into it, is just mind boggling.  I guess I just never realized the full extent to which this plan was carried out.

Did you watch both parts of that?  There was some shit that just blew my mind.  Unreal has fast his propaganda machine worked to get it going.

Didn't know there were two.  This one stopped when they went after Czechoslavakia in 38' I believe.

Snaggie, I highly recommend you read the new Eric Larson novel - In the Garden of Beasts is about the guy that was the American ambassador to Germany when Hitler was coming to power.  THe guy was looking for a government job that would allow him (a Chicago native) to write "the definitive history of the Deep South" (** snicker **).  He kept a journal and the book is based on his writings.

The entire world was in complete denial about what was happening in Germany because of the worldwide disdain for Jews.  "Oh, it's just the Jews..." - even tho it wasn't.  Even in the US, FDR and the US State Dept were more concerned about Germany defaulting on the money they owed the US after WWI.  The new Soviet government was actually more concerned about Hitler than anyone.  SO many people thought he was a flash in the pan, that Germans were too sophisticated to fall for his zealotry.  They did not count on him playing to the whole "German nationalism" thing.  They were a sovereign nation that got their asses handed to them in WWI and were forced to disarm.  he played on those fears and that insult and blamed the Jews for it all, and the rest, as they say...

Excellent book - a totally new perspective.  And the Ambassador's daughter is a whore...
