Auburn University closed Monday, Jan. 10, due to winter weather; Planned BCS viewing events canceled
AUBURN UNIVERSITY - AUDPSS/EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

Due to expected hazardous weather conditions on Sunday night through Monday, Auburn University will be closed on Monday, January 10, 2011. Classes will not be held. Viewing events planned for the Auburn Arena and Auburn University Student Center are canceled as well.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham is forecasting a potentially devastating winter weather event for the Auburn area. Winter precipitation is expected to begin Sunday evening as snow, with a transition to freezing rain after midnight. Freezing rain is expected to continue through at least midday Monday. Snow accumulations of up to one inch followed by ice accumulations of a quarter to half inch are forecast. Numerous, widespread power outages are possible and hazardous road conditions are expected. The National Weather Service is recommending that people stay off the roads Sunday night into Monday due to potentially hazardous road conditions. Power outages and hazardous road conditions may last into Tuesday or later.

The safety of all university students, residents, employees and visitors is of the utmost importance. We understand that students and many visitors are planning to travel to Auburn this weekend for the beginning of classes and viewing of the BCS National Championship game. This decision was made now to allow both students and fans the opportunity to change those plans before conditions become hazardous.

Residence halls are open and will remain open and staffed during this time. However, students who reside on campus but have not yet returned to campus are encouraged to stay home and wait to return to campus when it is safe to do so.

Some dining facilities will remain open to serve students. Hours of operation for Tiger Dining venues is as follows:

Sunday. January 9
Terrell will be open from 5pm-10pm
Denny's (Village) be open from 11am-10pm and Tiger Zone (Village) will be open from 5:30-8pm

Monday, January 10
Lupton Deli will open from 10am-3pm
Terrell will be open 10am-7pm
Village Dining will be open from 10am-7pm
(Not all menu items will be available due to reduced personnel)

The Night Security Shuttle will not operate on Sunday or Monday night. Tiger Transit will not operate on Monday.
Because hazardous conditions may continue into Tuesday, a decision regarding Tuesday's operations including classes will be made by noon on Monday, provided there is sufficient information to make the decision at that time. Updated information will be posted on this page as it becomes available. Class cancellations will also be sent out via AU ALERT.

Please take this weather event seriously as it is a potentially dangerous event. Review your emergency plans and be prepared for potential significant power outages and road closures.
