Newton named QB1 heading into summer

Cam Newton preps during Spring, he was selected QB1 on Wednesday.
Cameron Newton won’t have to wait until the summer to hear the news everyone knew was going to emerge eventually. He’s Auburn’s starting quarterback heading into the summer.
“After thoroughly evaluating our quarterbacks during spring practice and over the last week, Cam has emerged as our post-spring No. 1 quarterback,” coach Gene Chizik said in a university statement. “Obviously, he will have a lot of work to do over the summer and during two-a-days to continue along this path. We fully expect our other quarterbacks to continue to work hard and compete with Cam during the off-season and into fall camp.”
Newton came into the competition considered to be the front-runner and did nothing, it seemed, to lose that distinction. Players raved about his combination of speed and strength, along with an arm that will bring back the deep ball to Auburn’s offense, wide receiver Darvin Adams said.
Newton certainly didn’t choose Auburn over a bevy of other major schools to be a backup, especially with only two years of eligibility remaining, but Newton had nothing but glowing words for his competition when spring came to a close.
“It wasn’t ‘I’m going to Auburn because they’re going to give me the starting quarterback job.’ No. It’s still unproven,” Newton said. “Every quarterback brings something to the table, and everyone is talented.”
Still, Auburn’s coaches remained coy in naming a starter when spring came to a close. Anytime coaches fielded questions specifically geared toward Newton’s progress, the answers would typically drift in the direction of Auburn’s four quarterbacks as a whole.
The value in naming a starter before a vital summer of workouts, though, was too much to overlook.
“I think any time you can name a starter as early as possible that will help with your timing and all that,“ offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn said after the A-Day game. “Until we’re 110 percent for sure, we’ll be patient. That’s the best way to answer that.“
Now, apparently, Malzahn and Chizik are 110 percent sure that Newton is the guy.
