Florence started the day off right for the Tigers
Minutes after securing one of the nation’s best classes for the second year in a row Wednesday, Auburn coach Gene Chizik said he and the staff “scratched all the right itches” as far as recruiting needs.
But there’s still probably a bit of irritation in one spot the Tigers haven’t scratched yet.
Five-star tackle Cyrus Kouandjio, the consensus top tackle in the nation, staged one of the biggest coups of Signing Day by announcing his intention to sign with Auburn live on ESPNU.
The Tigers were late closers for Kouandjio, who seemed destined to join his brother, Arie, at Alabama, and his addition signaled the close of one of the best offensive line classes assembled in recent memory.
But, not long after his announcement, Kouandjio’s commitment to Auburn seemed a little less clear.

Chizik and gang stepped up the recruiting in January
Auburn hit a dry spell in recruiting during its national championship run.
Even though the wins kept piling up, the commitments did not, with a four-month gap between defensive end Keymiya Harrell’s pledge in early August and offensive lineman Greg Robinson’s commitment the weekend after the SEC Championship.
But once January hit, it was all systems go. And that was the plan all along.
“The coaches knew the eyes of the college football world don’t focus on recruiting until January,” said Bryan Matthews, who covers recruiting for AuburnUndercover.com. “They had the goal all along to be in position to finish strong in January so they would have one of the top classes and one of the most talked about classes in the country.”

and Fulse makes 22. Auburn continues to move up the recruiting board.
Tight end Brandon Fulse became the 22nd commitment for Auburn’s Class of 2011 on Thursday, announcing his decision on ESPNU.
The 6-foot-4, 250-pounder out of Fort Meade, Fla., is a four-star recruit according to Rivals.com, Scout.com and ESPN.com, and the No. 5 (ESPN), No. 10 (Rivals) and No. 13 (Scout) tight end prospect in the nation.
“It just felt like home. I really felt comfortable around the coaches,“ Fulse said. “I come from a really small community and Auburn is small. So I really adapted to that.“
Fulse also had offers from schools such as Alabama, Florida State, North Carolina and Miami, and chose Auburn over his No. 2 option Tennessee.
He’s the Tigers’ third commit in two days, after Mobile defensive end Devaunte Sigler and running back Tre Mason from Lake Worth, Fla., committed Wednesday.
