Ten Most Important SEC Games

10.  Miss St @ Auburn 9/10

Miss State wants to say hello to the world.  Auburn wants the world to take its new team seriously.  This is also the opening conference game for the SEC West.

9.  LSU @ Miss St 9/15

Thursday night on national TV.  LSU plays three meaningless out of conference games including a trip to Dallas to face a top 10 Oregon team and a trip to Morgantown to play West Virginia.  Smudged in between these games is an important SEC battle against Miss State.  If Miss St beats Auburn, it could make a serious explosion in the SEC if they beat LSU just five days later.  LSU can’t get caught focusing on their tough nonconference slate and lose to a hungry Bulldog team.

8.  Auburn @ Arkansas 10/8

With LSU and Alabama being the top two favorites to win the SEC West, this game in October is critical for Auburn and Arkansas.  The loser of this game may find itself outside of the SEC title race.

7.  Tennessee @ Florida 9/17

Tennessee has a cupcake of a schedule with only four road games.  Florida is breaking in a new coach and hoping to find an identity after last season’s debacle.

If Tennessee can get by Florida, they will be the favorite to win the SEC East.

6.  South Carolina @ Arkansas 11/5

A game that has snuck past many people, this will be a big factor in determining the SEC championship.  South Carolina can’t afford to lose very many SEC games especially since the SEC East is full of parity this season.  Arkansas is fighting to get to Atlanta and with Alabama and LSU predicted to be so good, they can’t afford a late season loss.

5.  Alabama @ Auburn 11/26

This game has had BCS implications the past few years.  In 2009, Alabama rolled into Auburn to win a close game and remain undefeated.  Last year, Auburn came back to beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa by one point.  This may again be a thrilling game that determines a championship appearance.  If the SEC is as tough as it appears to be this year, Alabama may need this victory to get to Atlanta.  Playing at Auburn against a young, talented team won’t be an easy win.

4.  Arkansas @ LSU 11/26

While the Iron Bowl may determine a participant in the SEC championship, the battle for the boot may also determine one.  There is no telling how the season is going to shake up by the end of November, but the four best teams in the SEC West will be competing at the same time.  Two rivalry games that may determine the SEC West champ.

3.  South Carolina @ Georgia 9/10

Early in the season, a pivotal SEC East game will take place.  South Carolina is my favorite to win the East, but if they can’t get past Athens early on, they may find themselves struggling in the competitive SEC East.

Georgia is also a predicted favorite by some to win the East because of their quarterback and their defensive veterans.  Whoever wins this game will have the early inside track to run the East as both play favorable schedules.

2.  Arkansas @ Alabama 9/24

The SEC opener for both of these teams.  Arkansas will have played three cupcake games to prepare for their biggest test of the season.  Alabama must win this game to stay on top of the SEC, and if they lose, they could find themselves rooting against LSU to lose throughout the year.  Arkansas must win this game to have any chance at getting to Atlanta.  They came close last season.  This will also determine if their defense has really improved.

1.  LSU @ Alabama 11/5

The two highest ranked teams in the SEC.  The two picked to win the SEC West and championship.

It’s a lot of fun to see these two teams battle it out late in the season, and this one should be one of the more exciting games.

It could be a winner-take-all, and that’s why it’s #1 on the list of most important SEC games.
