AU Tennis: Tigers headed for 12th straight NCAA Tourney

The No. 23 Auburn men's tennis team was selected to participate in the 2011 NCAA Tournament and will face North Carolina-Wilmington in the first round

The No. 23 Auburn men’s tennis team was selected to participate in the 2011 NCAA Tournament and will face North Carolina-Wilmington in the first round. The Tigers (15-9) will travel to Athens, Ga., for the first and second rounds and will take on the Seahawks (21-4) at 9 a.m. CT, May 13 at the Dan Magill Tennis Center.

“We are going to a place that we are familiar with at Georgia,” Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. “Hopefully that will be our advantage in the first round, and we will see what happens from there. We don’t know much about UNC-Wilmington other than the fact that they have had a great season.”

Auburn qualifies for its 12th straight NCAA Tournament appearance and 19th overall. Of those 19 NCAA trips, 17 have come under head coach Eric Shore, who is in his 21st season with the Tigers.

The Tigers are 20-18 in the NCAA Tournament and will face UNC-Wilmington for the first time in the national tournament.  The Seahawks will be appearing in the NCAA Regionals for the second time in the last three years. In 2009, UNCW lost to Virginia Tech in the Athens Regional at the University of Georgia.

The last time the Tigers and Seahawks squared off, the Tigers came away with a 6-1 victory in the first match of the 2004 season.

Auburn will be returning to action since the SEC Tournament, where the team finished their run in the second round with a loss to No. 11 Kentucky, 4-3.

The winner of next Saturday’s match will face the winner of No. 6 Georgia (20-5) and Samford (18-6) in Athens at 2 p.m. CT, May 14.
