AU SOFTBALL: Schmalz earns SEC weekly honor

Lauren Schmalz was named SEC Pitcher of the week

Lauren Schmalz was named Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week after earning a complete-game victory over No. 4 Georgia, the league office announced Monday.

The win gave Auburn its first victory over a top-five ranked team since a 2006 win over No. 4 Alabama. Additionally, the Tigers defeated the Bulldogs in Game 3 to claim is first-ever series victory over a top-five ranked team. The Game 2 win was also the 800th career victory for Tigers’ head coach Tina Deese.

It is the first career SEC Pitcher of the Week award for Schmalz, a junior from Pembroke Pines, Fla.

“I’m very happy for Lauren and very proud of the way she pitched against Georgia,” Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. “Georgia is an excellent hitting team and Lauren held them to one run to get us the first win of the series. She moved the ball around well and never let them get anything going offensively.”

In Auburn’s 3-1 victory over the Bulldogs, Schmalz allowed just one leadoff hitter to reach base with that coming on a single in the second inning. Schmalz gave up just one run (earned) on a one-out, solo home run in the third inning. After allowing the home run, Schmalz retired 13 of the next 16 batters including the final eight batters of the game.

Schmalz leads the Auburn pitching staff in wins at 14-5 and earlier this season became the first Tigers’ pitcher to begin a season 10-0. Schmalz is ninth in the SEC with 141 strikeouts and tied for sixth with 41 strikeouts looking.
